Joseph C. Collins, PhD, Recognized for Excellence in the Field of Chemistry Education

Dr. Collins has devoted much of his career to the study of water in living cells.

VALATIE, NY, October 05, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joseph C. Collins, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Contributing more than 60 years to the field as a medicinal chemist, Dr. Collins has found success as the president of Molecular Presentations in Valatie, New York since 1991. Having long been interested in spatial structures of natural molecules, he has conducted immeasurable research, made numerous discoveries and been extensively published. Dr. Collins states that the key to his success in chemistry have been based on the construction and detailed analysis of three-dimensional models of natural and drug molecules, a practice he has maintained since his time in graduate school.

Early in his career, Dr. Collins excelled as an associate professor and chairman of the chemistry department at Illinois Wesleyan University between 1963 and 1968. While there, he developed a reagent which selectively converts primary alcohols to aldehydes. It was subsequently named "The Collins Reagent" and, currently, is included in organic chemistry texts as an important synthetic contribution. At Sterling Winthrop Research Institute in Rensselaer, NY, he became vice president of the chemistry division in 1977 and vice president of technical affairs for Sterling Drug Corporation in 1981.

In 1987, he retired from Sterling Drug and, in 1991, published "The Matrix of Life," in which he proposed that it is the formation of Transient Linear Elements of Hydration on molecules and between ions in living cells that provides for integrating spatial order. Since then, he has continued to refine and promote the concepts in articles on the web. During retirement, he served as the president of the Kinderhook Lake Corporation and received an award for his work as a chemist in improving the quality of water in the lake. Among other community-wide efforts, in 1962 Dr. Collins initiated a search for a park site for East Greenbush, New York, proposed a site to the town board and watched as the site was purchased and developed into the Town Park.

Dr. Collins obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in organic and physical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For more than 65 years, he has been a prominent member of the American Chemical Society. In 1953, he received the Cutter Award for his research as an undergraduate and, as mentioned above, was recognized for The Collins Reagent by Synthetic Chemists Associates in 1968 and later received an Award for Service to the lake by the Kinderhook Lake Corporation.
