Driven by her passion for the field of geriatrics, Dr. Bean began her career as an in-home companion with Aging Excellence. Between 2006 and 2011, she assisted elders with daily living activities while providing support and companionship. Following this period, she gained valuable professional expertise as an assistant activities director for Bay Square at Yarmouth and as a manager, volunteer coordinator and elder life specialist for Maine Medical Center's Hospital Elder Life Program. During her time with the Center, Dr. Bean provided geriatric resources for patients, caregivers and families by utilizing evidence based practices, collaborated with colleges and universities to provide students with learning opportunities and disseminated information on best care practices to area hospitals.
Supported by her outstanding breadth of knowledge, Dr. Bean serves today as a licensed clinical professional counselor for the New England Family Institute, and the director of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Southern Maine. In addition to working with the American Therapeutic Recreation Association to meet the professional standards of recreation therapists, she advises enrolled students, creates and teaches online courses and provides students with letters of recommendation for graduate studies or jobs. Additionally, Dr. Bean is a blog writer and webinar creator for Thoughtful Engagement, which is part of Geriatric Resources in Peoria, Arizona.
A recognized expert in her field, Dr. Bean holds an undergraduate degree in therapeutic recreation, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in education leadership through the University of Southern Maine. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, she aligns herself with the American Therapeutic Recreation Association, Chi Sigma Iota, the American Counseling Association, the American Mental Health Counselors Association, the Maine Recreation Therapy Association and the Bertha Crosley Ball Center of Compassion.
For her professional excellence, Dr. Bean was bestowed with the Best Research Award through Maine Medical Center and the Center of Excellence Award through Harvard Beth Israel Hospital. Among her career highlights, she is most proud to have watched her students grow as therapists and pass their national certification. Likewise, she delights in the healing process of her clients. Looking toward the future, Dr. Bean aims to continue teaching and serving as a psychotherapist.
