Driven to become a therapist since junior high school, Ms. Lewis obtained a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in sociology at the University of Charleston in 1991. Following this accomplishment, she began in the field as a case manager for Shawnee Hills and pursued a Master of Arts in counseling from Marshall University Graduate College. Upon earning her graduate degree, Ms. Lewis became a therapist with Shawnee Hills and eventually served as an intake coordinator and family therapist with the organization.
In the years that followed, Ms. Lewis gained valuable expertise in the field at a number of healthcare facilities, including the Thomas Memorial Hospital, Charleston Treatment Center, the Family Resource Center at Women and Children's Hospital, and PSIMED. Likewise, she found success as a subject matter expert through the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium. Drawing on her considerable expertise, Ms. Lewis serves today as a substance abuse therapist with Valley Health-Hurricane.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Lewis has expanded upon her education by becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor, an Advanced Certified Addictions Counselor, a Certified Recovery Nutrition Coach through the Academy for Addiction & Mental Nutrition, an ACE Certified Personal Trainer, and an RRCA Certified Adult Distance Running Coach. In order to remain aware of ongoing changes in the field, she aligns herself with the American Counseling Association, the West Virginia Certification Board for Addiction and Prevention Professionals, and the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium.
Alongside her work, Ms. Lewis served as a founding board member of Rea of Hope Fellowship Home Inc. and as a founding team member of the Drug Addicted Mothers Baby Program at the Charleston Area Medical Center's Women and Children's Hospital. Well regarded for her knowledge in the field, she has co-authored and edited such works as "Tobacco Cessation and Substance Abuse Treatment in Women's Healthcare: A Clinical Guide," "Evaluation of a Training to Reduce Provider Bias Toward Pregnant Patients With Substance Abuse" and "Assuring Public Safety in the Delivery of Substance Abuse Services."
For her professional achievements, Ms. Lewis won the Distinguished Service Award through the West Virginia Association for Alcohol and Drug Counselors and the Lisa Grossi Award through the WV Certification Board for Addiction and Prevention Professionals. Among her career highlights, she is most proud to have served as the president of the West Virginia Certification Board for Addiction and Prevention Professionals. She also chaired the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium Advanced Alcohol and Drug Credentialing Committee. Looking toward the future, Ms. Lewis aims to expand her work to include marginalized women, who have the most difficulty accessing substance abuse treatment. Furthermore, she intends to educate others about the role of exercise and nutrition in substance use disorders and mental health recovery.
