Recently named Professor Emeritus at California State University (CSU), Fullerton in 2019, Dr. Timm has enjoyed a wonderful career in music and music education that spanned nearly five decades. As a professor of music, he taught various courses including his very popular course, the History of Film Music which became the most popular course on campus. Timm was appointed Director of the School of Music at Cal State University in Fullerton being in charge of both the full time and part time faculty and hundreds of music majors. Dr. Timm began his tenure at CSU Fullerton in 1977 following a three-year commitment as assistant professor of music at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. As a professional oboist he has taught oboe majors as an adjunct professor of oboe at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Pomona College of Music in Claremont, California, Azusa Pacific University, California Baptist University in Riverside, Vanguard University, BIOLA and students at both UCLA and USC. Notably, Dr. Timm has taught approximately 75,000 students during his career in academia.
A renowned performing musician, Dr. Timm has served the arts and entertainment industry as a freelance recording artist for the Hollywood motion picture and television industry since 1972. He has been involved with various movie and television production studios and networks, including Paramount, Columbia Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, 20th Century Fox and NBC, ABC and CBS, being heard as oboe and English horn soloist on over 350 movie and television soundtracks. His playing can also be heard accompanying various well-known pop/rock artists. He has been a soloist in prestigious concert halls such as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., Royal Albert Hall in London, England, Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Over the last 45 years he has performed as principal oboist for several well-known orchestras, including the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, the Orange County Pacific Symphony, the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Pasadena Chamber Orchestra, the Asian-America Orchestra of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Music Center Opera Orchestra, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra in Charleston, South Carolina, and the Columbia Philharmonic in Columbia, South Carolina. He has also performed for various Broadway musical productions in the orchestras in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theater at the LA Music Center and the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. Earlier in his career he also performed with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra.
He is also a producer, having produced large scale concerts at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with film composer Bill Conti (composer of the Rocky movie scores) conducting the members of the Academy Award Orchestra. In addition to this, he has also worked as a co-producer on several movies and television specials.
Dr. Timm developed an affinity for music while growing up because both of his parents were musicians. His father was the Dean of music at Louisiana State University (LSU), and his mother was a flute player and professor. After high school, Dr. Timm obtained a Bachelor of Music at LSU in 1971. Accepted to the prestigious Yale University, he then earned a Master of Music in 1973, a Master of Musical Arts in 1974 and a Doctor of Musical Arts in 1981, all from Yale.
Supporting his prominent career, Dr. Timm has been a member of the International Double Reed Society. As a specialist in woodwind musical instruments, he recently authored the 3rd edition of his book THE WOODWINDS, a pedagogical book on teaching and playing all of the woodwind instruments used in colleges to train future band and orchestra conductors. Seeing a need to preserve classic movie scores for future generations, he, along with prominent movie composers, producers, and film historians, met in the 1970s and later formed a very important organization which they called the Society for the Preservation of Film Music, which is now known as the Film Music Society. Dr. Timm is a member of the Editorial Board for its Film Music Journal. As an author and Hollywood studio musician, he has written a very successful textbook use by professors around the world called FILM MUSIC: THE SOUL OF CINEMA originally published by Simon and Schuster and now published by Pearson Publishers. It has sold literally tens of thousands of copies and was the first textbook ever written on film music appreciation. He is considered a pioneer in the field of film music history and appreciation and has been a keynote speaker at various film festivals around the United States. He is also an active member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma and Mu Sigma Rho, and as a faculty advisor for Phi Mu Alpha.
Highlighting his achievements, Dr. Timm received a Spotlight Award as the Most Inspirational Artist by the Upland Community Foundation in 2010. Along with other accolades, more recently, he was named Distinguished Professor of the Year by CSU Fullerton College of the Arts in 2019. However, he considers one of his greatest honors and achievements to be the experiences he has had over the decades performing with some of the greatest artists and musicians in the world in the movie and theater business.
