He was recognized among the 40 Under 40 in Pittsburgh Magazine.
PITTSBURGH, PA, October 15, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rev. Paul Abernathy has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After serving with the U.S. Army in the Iraq War, Rev. Abernathy felt a strong calling to join the ministry. During his military service, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in international studies and affairs from Wheeling Jesuit University and became interested in public international affairs after reading about conflict in the Middle East. Rev. Abernathy was also drawn to study the area because of the impactful role that the United States plays in global politics, which he believes comes with a responsibility to help others.
Rev. Abernathy later obtained a Master of Arts in public and international affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Divinity from St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary. In his career, he has worked as the director of Focus Pittsburgh, a faith-based national charity that provides services to the homeless and working poor. In 2020, Rev. Abernathy was appointed as the chief executive officer of the Neighborhood Resilience Project (NRP) after noticing a struggle within the local community to confront severe community trauma, which has roots in poverty, gun violence, government neglect and racism.
As a result of his tenure in the military, Rev. Abernathy was familiar with the lasting effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and was immediately drawn to working toward solutions for instances within his community. In his current position, he remains committed to the organization's mission by cultivating partnerships, supporting strategic growth and catalyzing program development. Likewise, Rev. Abernathy specializes in public speaking, community organizing, fundraising, collaborating and project management.
For his exemplary efforts over the years, Rev. Abernathy was presented with Father Pedro's Distinguished Alumni Award from Wheeling Jesuit University, the Larry Richert's Hometown Hero Award and the Fab 40 Award from New Pittsburgh Courier. He was also recognized among the 40 Under 40 in Pittsburgh Magazine, and he was previously invited to participate in the Harvard Business School Young American Leaders Program (YALP). Throughout his career, Rev. Abernathy has been incredibly proud of his work with the organization that now has a national reach on a professional level.
In addition to his work with the aforementioned organizations, Rev. Abernathy also serves as pastor and minister of Saint Moses the Black Orthodox Church. He is also civically active with the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, the Foundation of Hope and the Orthodox Volunteer Corps. Rev. Abernathy has attributed his professional success to surrounding himself with strong entrepreneurial leaders. Looking toward the future, he plans to grow his organization to become a cornerstone of other like-minded community organizations. Rev. Abernathy would also like to connect with people from private sectors who share his dedication to community revitalization to build resilience and promote health and well-being in challenged communities.
