NEWPORT NEWS, VA, October 20, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Volker D. Burkert has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Drawing inspiration from the example of his physics teacher, Dr. Burkert received a master's degree in physics and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Bonn in Germany. He began his career in post-doctoral positions at the University of Bonn before becoming an Assistant Professor. During this time, he carried out research both at the University's electron accelerator facility, and at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland.
In 1985, Dr. Burkert accepted a position as a Staff Scientist at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility that was then a proposed electron accelerator project, and has since developed into an internationally recognized premier laboratory for nuclear physics employing high-energy continuous electron beams. The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. After initially preparing the planned detector system for high intensity electron beam operation, and his promotion to Principal Staff Scientist, Dr. Burkert took charge of the research group of over 35 scientists, engineers and technicians in 2003 to carry out a research program of highest quality and impact.
The leadership position Dr. Burkert held until 2019, also included guiding several international collaboration, including the CLAS collaboration of over 200 scientists and students in their pursuit of scientific discoveries. His responsibilities also included planning of new experimental equipment to exploit the opportunities afforded by an energy-doubled accelerator, a DoE project that is now completed. The new experimental equipment he conceived and developed stands as an example in scientific instrumentation for the past 4 years.
As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Burkert has authored and co-authored more than 350 scientific papers, published in first tier journals, throughout his career. He was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and was also presented with the 2019 Virginia Outstanding Scientist award. Looking towards the future Dr. Burkert is now involved in an even larger project, the US Electron-Ion-Collider, a $2 Billion project that is designed to delve deeper than ever into the fundamental structure of matter. He also plans to continue offering his expertise to future generations.
