After serving as a briefing attorney for the 14th Court of Appeals in Houston and as an attorney for Andrews & Kurth, LLP from 1985 to 1997, Ms. Sears transitioned into a career in law librarianship. Hired by Brown, Parker & Leahy, LLP (later merged with Thompson & Knight, LLP) as the law library manager in 1997, she served the attorneys and clients of the firm for nearly 15 years. She subsequently became the research services manager for Greenberg Traurig, LLP, before being recruited in 2012 to her current position as law library director for the Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library in Houston. Ms. Sears is the first woman to serve as the director of the Law Library since its formation over a century ago.
As a young lawyer with the l4th Court of Appeals, Ms. Sears was responsible for assisting judges with legal research, opinion drafting, and other efforts. Once in private practice, she gained additional experience with the litigation and appellate sections of Andrews & Kurth. While attending the University of Houston Law Center in the early 1980s, Ms. Sears served as an editor for the Houston Journal of International Law.
In preparation for her legal career, Ms. Sears earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, summa cum laude, from Ohio University in 1979, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Houston Law Center in 1983. In preparation for her career in law librarianship, she acquired a Master of Library & Information Science degree from the University of North Texas in 1997. Ms. Sears is a licensed attorney and a member of the State Bar of Texas. She is also a member of the American Bar Association and the Houston Bar Association.
As part of her professional commitments to law librarianship, Ms. Sears is a member of the American Association of Law Libraries and the Southwestern Association of Law Libraries. In addition, she is a member of the Houston Area Law Librarians, serving that organization over the years as a treasurer and a member of the executive board. Ms. Sears was recognized by the American Association of Law Libraries with the Bethany J. Ochal Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession in 2019 and with the Robert L. Oakley Advocacy Award in 2021.
