An expert in biotechnology-based diagnostics and pharmaceutics, she has conducted a great deal of research in bacterial, viral and mammalian cell genetics, as well as in physiology and interactions. With more than 40 years of experience in the industry to her credit, Dr. Propst notably held positions as President and Chief Executive Officer of Affiliated Scientific Inc.; Vice President Worldwide, Research and Development for Flow Laboratories Inc., Flow General Inc.; Vice President Research and Development at Ayerst/API Laboratories; and leading management roles at Abbott Laboratories and at GTE Laboratories in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Additionally, Dr. Propst founded and directed the Center for Biotechnology at Northwestern University and developed and taught courses in strategic management and in entrepreneurship at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University from 1990 until 1995. Prior to that she was a visiting professor of genetics at the University of Illinois-Chicago from 1989 to 1990. As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Propst has contributed many articles to scientific journals on the subjects of biotechnology, molecular genetics, microbiology, virology, cell culture and technology management. She also authored two books "Computer-Aided Drug Design" in 1989 and "Nucleic Acid Targeted Drug Design" in 1992.
Professionally, she has served on boards of directors for various companies, as well as on the board of directors of the Keynote Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology, the Consortium for Plant Biotechnology Research, the Society of Industrial Microbiology and other notable organizations. Dr. Propst is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Ocean Conservancy, the National Wildlife Federation, the Sierra Club and the Waller County Horse Council, a Texas domestic nonprofit corporation.
An alumnus of Vanderbilt University, Dr. Propst received a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1967, graduating second in her class. She was subsequently accepted to the prestigious Yale University, where she earned a M. Phil. in microbiology in 1970 and a Ph.D. in molecular biology in1973. Furthermore, she was elected to the honorable societies of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. Dr. Propst was named to the Outstanding Working Women in the U.S. for 1982 and has received numerous science and business awards for her success.
