Mr. Young initially obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1979. He had gained valuable initial experience as a laboratory technician with the Public Service Company of Oklahoma from 1972 to 1975, an engineer with Cities Service Natural Gas Liquids, a business development/operations engineer with Tenneco Oil Company, and a staff planning analyst with Tennessee Gas Pipeline from 1980 to 1991. Mr. Young later excelled as a senior engineer with Tenneco in Evanston, Wyoming and Salt Lake City while working for Kern River Gas Transmission from 1982 to 1994.
Mr. Young made an impact as business development manager with Vintage Petroleum Inc. in Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1993 to 1994, a senior process engineer with Nye Engineering in Friendswood, Texas and Gulsby Engineering from 1995 to 1997 and a senior, principal and consulting engineer with Mustang Engineering, Technip and Deepwater Engineering from 1997 to 2004. He was additionally active as an engineering director with Hess Corporation from 2004 to 2006, the chief process technical advisor with Oil and Gas Solutions from 2008 to 2011 and a process and facilities manager and chief process engineer with the Xodus Group from 2011 to 2015. Since 2015, Mr. Young has worked as a consulting managing member with AC Engineering LLC.
During his engineering career Mr. Young has been a significant contributor to multiple teams that have led the industry in achieving many world firsts. Longest subsea tiebacks (BG-Egypt, Scarrab and Saffron, ExxonMobil MICA tieback to BP Pompano), world's first cell spar (Kerr McGee Red Hawk), FPSOs (Chevron-Frade in Brazil, Shell) and largest at the time offshore platforms and subsea developments (BP-Mad Dog, BP Thunderhorse and Chevron-Jack). Mr. Young served as a key member of an API task force that developed a new subsea safety specification and on a revisit of the API 14C safety standard. Mr. Young as a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers served on the International Awards Committee and served as the Chairman of the Committee before he retired.
Mr. Young has been certified as a professional engineer through the Oklahoma State Board of Professional Engineering and Land Surveying, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development, the Texas Board of Professional Engineers, and Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying. He was formerly licensed in Arizona, Oregon, and Hawaii. He was inspired to enter chemical engineering while with the Public Service Company of Oklahoma, through which he was encouraged to enter engineering instead of the chemical field by the chemist at Tulsa Power Station. His most notable career achievement has been the development of new offshore procedures for the American Petroleum Institute and a joint patent developed with two ExxonMobil co-workers while working in the Exxon-Mobil Subsea and Pipelines Team. In the coming years, Mr. Young intends to remain retired while traveling with his wife of 50 years.
