NEW YORK, NY, October 26, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Catherine Jean Callovini Barbour has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

For Catherine Jean Callovini Barbour, an accomplished actress, theater director, and painter in the New York City area since the early 1960s, the gravitation toward her professional path felt like destiny.

A natural entertainer since she was a child living in Washington, D.C., Ms. Barbour would put on plays in her backyard and her parents would hang up a curtain on the back porch, from which she would emerge and sing "Give My Regards to Broadway." When she was 10 years old and living in a small town with her grandmother, her school held a revue in which every class performed something unique on stage. While walking home afterward, reflecting on the feeling she got from being on stage and having people watch and applaud her, she looked up at the sky and noticed that the stars were especially bright—it was in this moment that she knew what she was going to do for the rest of her life. "I just always knew it," she later said.

As she grew up, Ms. Barbour's dreams only got bigger and she immersed herself in the city's community theater scene, performing as an actress in a wide variety of shows from 1950 to 1958. Afterward, she relocated to Manhattan, where, in 1960, she earned a certificate from the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts, an institution she would later serve in the roles of instructor and director to a whole generation of acting students from 1963 to 1971. In the interim, she continued to act around the city for a number of years. Additionally, since 1965, she has excelled as a performer, teacher, and director at the American Mime Theatre, the oldest continuing professional mime company in the country. Under the guidance of her mentor, Paul J. Curtis, the founder of the company and its director for 60 years, Ms. Barbour not only found lasting success in the realm of performing and teaching mime, but learned to truly live creatively every single day and always strive to "be better than yesterday."

In the midst of Ms. Barbour's primary endeavors, she also served as an administrative assistant of International Mimes and Pantomimists from 1973 to 1974, and later obtained a bachelor's degree from Marymount Manhattan College in 1987 and a Master of Fine Arts in theater design from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in 1991. In addition, she has taught an American Mime class at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts from 2006 to 2007. On top of numerous performances with the American Mime Theatre, she has shined in a documentary about miming, has appeared on "The Today Show" and "Asayan," a former Tokyo-based talent search variety show, edited six video documentaries, and produced and directed "American Mime Performance Demonstration" at the Cooper Union, among several other plays. In her own eyes, her proudest professional achievement has been writing on the evolution of "American Mime" teaching methods—with her goal being that people understand the merits of living a creative life and always pushing one's self artistically. As a painter, Ms. Barbour has expressed her craft in several exhibits across numerous New York City venues, including the National Arts Club and Sauander-O'Reilly Galleries.

As a testament to her impact on the world of performing arts, Ms. Barbour has been honored with a Charles Jehlinger Award from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and a Merit Award from the Art Students League of New York, as well as honors from The Players NYC and the National Association of Professional Women. An associate of the American Watercolor Society, she has been a longtime affiliate of such organizations as the Rehoboth Art League, Art Students League of New York, 1100 Watercolor Society, Sons of the Desert, The Players NYC, National Movement Theater Association, Drama League of New York, and International Mimes and Pantomimists.

Speaking on the future generation of artists and creatives, Ms. Barbour says she believes everyone has a certain destiny but not everybody has the ability to find what theirs is. She hopes to convey to others, "It is important to always strive for the next big thing, to be better than yesterday…and to live a creative life."
