MINOT, ND, October 26, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rita M. Curl-Langager, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Ms. Curl-Langager, professor emeritus at Minot State University in North Dakota, taught in the department of addiction studies, psychology and social work on campus between 1991 and 2018. During her tenure in Minot, she taught over 100 courses in child development, adolescent psychology, and adulthood and aging, 25 courses in applied behavior analysis, and additional courses in industrial/organizational psychology, psychology practicum, and service learning, as well as the senior capstone course. She previously held the position of assistant professor in the department of education and psychology for six years before she was promoted to a full professorship in 1997. Ms. Curl-Langager also was involved on several committees, notably chairing the intellectual climate committee from 2005 to 2007 and the academic assessment committee between 2006 and 2011.
Amassing more than four decades of expertise in education, Ms. Curl-Langager began her career in 1974 as a teacher for the Empowering People. Inspiring Capabilities organization in Peoria, Illinois. By 1978, she was acquired by the University of Kansas in Lawrence to teach and conduct research for the Special Preschool for Children with Behavior and Learning Problems. Over the next few years, she held various positions, including research associate at the Bureau of Child Research and adjunct assistant professor in the department of human development. Ms. Curl-Langager was subsequently recruited by Utah State University in Logan as a research associate and an instructor of special education in 1987 before being named as an adjunct associate professor in the department in psychology in 1988.
In addition to teaching, Ms. Curl-Langager was the dissemination coordinator for the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities at Minot State University from 1997 to 2001 and the project director for the North Dakota Project for Older Persons with Developmental Disabilities between 1993 and 2002. She also spent four years as the director of research for the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities, during which time she also functioned as the project director for Encore: An Entrepreneurial Model Utilizing Nonprofessional Co-Workers as Sources of Employment Support from 1992 until 1996. Ms. Curl-Langager served in several similar capacities at the University of Washington in Seattle between 1993 and 1996 and Utah State University from 1985 until 1991. Additionally, she worked with the Kansas Neurological Institute in Topeka from 1983 to 1984 as a psychologist, and later consulted independently between 1981 and 2015.
Ms. Curl-Langager secured nearly a dozen grants to support her research, notably serving as the principal investigator on nine of them. As a scholar and researcher, she contributed to numerous books, professional publications, and scholarly journals as an author, co-author, reviewer and guest reviewer. She also had the opportunity to present her studies at numerous workshops and symposiums. Ms. Curl-Langager is currently working to complete a 12-chapter psychology textbook on adulthood, development and aging. She also has plans to compose an instructor's manual to accompany the book, which she plans to complete in late 2021.
In preparation for her career, Ms. Curl-Langager received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, cum laude, at Illinois Wesleyan University in 1974. She subsequently completed a Master of Science in child development and family relationships at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1976 and a Doctor of Philosophy in developmental and child psychology at the University of Kansas in Lawrence in 1982. Furthermore, Ms. Curl-Langager earned an elementary education teaching certificate for grades K-9 in the state of Illinois.
To better support her professional goals, Ms. Curl-Langager is a member of the Gerontological Society of America, the Association for Psychological Science and the American Psychological Association. She also has been greatly involved with the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP). Among her roles with the STP, Ms. Curl-Langager was a member of the E-publishing task force and chairperson of the membership task force, the G. Stanley Hall/Harry Kirke Wolf Lecture Series for three American Psychological Association conventions and the work group on responses to the principles for quality of undergraduate education in psychology.
In her home community of Minot, Ms. Curl-Langager has served as the chairperson for several nonprofit organizations, including the Minot Symphony League from 2003 to 2005, the Taube Museum of Art in Minot between 2002 and 2003, the Minot Symphony Orchestra from 2001 until 2005, and the chairperson of the City of Minot planning commission from 2007 to 2011, where she formerly served as a commissioner for five years. Ms. Curl-Langager received an Award for Outstanding Research Presentation from the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy in 1980 and a Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Poster Presentation from the Association for Behavior Analysis in 1989. She was later named Exchangite of the Year by the Minot Exchange Club in 1998. She currently serves as co-chairperson to the capital campaign committee and the 2032 centennial celebration for the International Peace Garden.
