After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in physics and mathematics from Smith College, she continued her studies at Columbia University, where she encountered resistance to the idea of obtaining a doctoral degree in physics as a woman. Electing to rededicate herself to her original passion for anthropology, she received a Doctor of Philosophy in anthropology from the university and began her career as a professor at the Herbert H. Lehman College and City University Graduate Center. Having earned emeritus status, Dr. Mencher continues to serve as the chairperson of the Second Chance Foundation.
In addition to her primary professional endeavors, Dr. Mencher has worked as an international consultant for such organizations and initiatives as Women in Development, Sustainable Agriculture India, Women Providing Water to Villages, and various alternative agriculture farmers. She also served as a visiting lecturer at the Achutha Menon Center of the Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences, and as a presenter at the NLP Workshops in Bangalore and New Delhi, India. Dr. Mencher is also a certified trainer in neurolinguistic programming.
As a respected voice in her field, she has presented at numerous conferences in her industry. In addition, she has authored several books, including "Mixed Blessings: Women and Religious Fundamentalism" in 1996, "Female Headed/Female Support Households: A Cross Cultural Comparison" and "Where Have All the Men Gone?" in 1993, "Social Anthropology of Peasantry" in 1983 and "Agriculture and Social Structure in Tamil Nadu: Past Origins, Present Transformations, and Future Prospects" in 1978. Dr. Mencher has also contributed more than 85 articles to professional journals and publications throughout the course of her career.
For her efforts in her career, Dr. Mencher has been recognized by many organizations and institutions. To wit, she received a Fulbright scholarship to India and numerous grants for her research. She was also a Guggenheim Fellow and an Ogden Mills Fellow at the American Museum of Natural History. Dr. Mencher maintains her affiliation with such pertinent groups as the American Anthropology Association, the Society of Applied Anthropology, the Association for Women in Development, the Society for International Development, the National Association of Neurolinguistic Programming and the Association for Asian Studies, among many others.
