Now retired, Mr. McLain accrued over 30 years of professional experience. After serving in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969, he began working as a warehouse clerk for Seattle Transfer and Storage. Thereafter, he was employed in various capacities with Transcontinental Music Co., A.L. Tokin Custom House Broker, the Eckert Overseas Agency and the Port of Seattle between 1970 and 1979. Mr. McLain subsequently settled into a lengthy tenure as a systems analyst on behalf of the Boeing Company until 2001. Following this period, he served at Sinnett's Market Place and Longview Fibre Co. before his retirement in 2007.
Mr. McLain's excellence in the field is largely born of his academic efforts, which began at the University of Washington, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1973 and a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1975. He subsequently became certified in business computing at North Seattle Community College in 1979. Mr. McLain concluded his education at Seattle University in 2002, whereupon he graduated with a Master of Divinity.
Since 2019, Mr. McLain has served as the treasurer and chair of the music committee for the Unitarian Universalist Church of Vancouver. He previously functioned as the treasurer for the 19th Legislative District Democrats, and in similar roles with the Washington State Federation of Democratic Women and the Cowlitz County Democratic Women. For his civic accomplishments, he was presented with the Warren G. Magnusion Lifetime Service Award from the Cowlitz County Democrats and a Decorated Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal from the Department of Defense. Additionally, for his service in the military, the United States Navy decorated Mr. McLain with a Vietnam Service Medal and a Navy Unit Commendation.
