Dr. Smernou obtained a Master of Science in quantitative psychology in 1985 and a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental psychology in 1992, both from the University of Georgia at Athens. To remain abreast of developments in the fields of research and psychology, she became a member of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science among other organizations.
In 1996, Dr. Smernou co-founded Telegnosis, Inc., and is the president and the chief executive officer. With Telegnosis, her responsibilities include the creation and implementation of the company's mission, strategy development, goal setting, market research, risk assessment and the overall company's success. Telegnosis, Inc. is a consulting company with dual areas of expertise, software technology and psychological assessment.
Dr. Smernou is overseeing the development of targeted measurement instruments addressing diverse clients' for consults on specialized psychological assessment. Based upon requirements acquired from individuals, corporations and organizations, questionnaires and assessment tools are developed on an ad hoc basis. Assessment tools reflect the clients' diversity and span a wide range of psychological constructs, such as personality traits, aptitudes, scholastic ability and performance prediction, identity aspects. Dr. Smernou researches current advances in construct definition, conducts rigorous studies for validation, potential bias and reliability, and builds questionnaire scoring keys for each specific assessment tool.
Known for her pioneering work in the assessment of Place-based Identity, Dr. Smernou obtained statistical evidence individuals form attachments with the physical environment, and define their identity in terms of it, albeit to a varying degree. Two questionnaires Dr. Smernou has developed, the Environmental Orientation Survey and the Place Identity Questionnaire have become benchmarks in the field. Collected data from the questionnaires have provided evidence of the importance of the physical environment as part of ones' self.
In the coming year, Dr. Smernou is eagerly anticipating her next endeavor as a full-time visual artist. A life-long passion for aesthetics and narratives, inform and distinguish her images. One of her interests has been the visual representation of identity aspects, especially aspects referring to female roles. Reflected in her artworks are her insight into human behavior and her interest in metaphors. Dr. Smernou has published a number of photography books depicting environments with a unique ambiance and distinct physical characteristics. Among her books, "Blooming Fields" is a visual anthology of photographic scenes conveying the spirit of places during their flourishing moments and constructing a psychological landscape.
