A leader in her field, Dr. Woods served as the dean for arts and sciences at Chesapeake College in Maryland from 1999 until her retirement in 2011. Notably, she facilitated the development of several new academic programs at the institution and helped to craft distinct teacher education tracks for community college students. In these regards, she served on the Maryland Professional Development Advisory Council of the MD State Department of Education (MSDE), 2006-2010; the Salisbury University Education Advisory Committee, 2006-2011; and the MSDE Learning Task Force of the Visionary Panel for Better Schools, 2001-2002.
Noted as the dean of the social sciences, public services, and basic education division at Harrisburg Area Community College in Pennsylvania from 1998 to 1999 and 1994 to 1996, she additionally contributed to the aforementioned academic institution, being appointed acting vice president of faculty and instruction from 1996 to 1998, serving as assistant dean of academic affairs and chairman of the school's social sciences, public services, and basic education division from 1989 to 1994. She designed and directed the exemplary, nationally-recognized HACC developmental education program. She further flourished at the Harrisburg Area Community College as a faculty member, promoted through the academic ranks from instructor in 1969 to assistant professor, associate professor, professor, and 1994 to senior professor of English and Education.
Likewise, Dr. Woods further served the college with progressively demanding management and administrative roles, including assistant dean of academic affairs/academic foundations and basic education division from 1987 to 1989, director of the academic foundations program from 1983-1987, chairman of the directors' council from 1981to 1982, coordinator/director of the Act 101 Basic Studies program from 1978 to1983, supervisor of the writing center from 1975 to 1978. Early in her career, she worked as a teacher at Preston School in Maryland from 1967 to 1969 and a teacher at Berry O'Kelly School in North Carolina from 1965 to 1967. With a plethora of knowledge at her disposal, Dr. Woods authored "Handbook for Tutors" and "The Status of Students Up to Six years After Completing a College Basic Writing Course," in addition to co-authoring "Building a Legacy of Sisterhood and Timeless Service: AKA-KTO on Maryland's Upper Eastern Shore" in 2013.
Initially earning a Bachelor of Arts from Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1965, Dr. Woods later obtained a Master of Education from Duke University in 1968. From 1994 to 1995, she was a Kellogg Fellow in expanding leadership diversity in community college programs. Following these achievements, Dr. Woods graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in English from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1995.
The president of the NAACP Caroline County Maryland Branch since 2021, Dr. Woods has served with numerous professional, civic, and community organizations/agencies at local, state, and national levels, including: president of Pennsylvania Association of Developmental Educators, president of Youth Urban Services Board of Advisors, college representative on North East Council BAA of American Association of Community Colleges, member of PA Governor's Interagency Coordinating Council of ABLE, Education Advisory Council for Pennsylvania State University – Harrisburg Campus, Harrisburg Mayor's Commission on Literacy, board of directors for Alternative Rehabilitation Communities, board of trustees for Academy Arts Museum of Easton, MD, and American Association of University Women – Easton Branch, to name a few. Additionally, she remains active as chairman of the board of directors for Lockerman Schools Association, Inc., volunteer (former board member) with the Talbot Historical Society, life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and workshop leader/facilitator. In light of all her accomplishments, she was previously highlighted in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. She was notably presented the Golden Soror of the Year Award from the North Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha in 1917, the Harriett Tubman Award and Medal from Talbot County Branch NAACP in 2016, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Caroline County Branch NAACP in 2014, several distinguished community service and leadership awards, among numerous other accolades. Well-regarded in her community, Dr. Woods was eponymously honored with the Dr. Willie G. Woods Day for Distinguished Service and Leadership in Central Pennsylvania by the Mayor of Harrisburg.
