Driven to become an educator, Ms. Dourte earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary and special education through Millersville University of Pennsylvania in 1965. She also took postgraduate courses to be a better teacher and expand her expertise in special education. She was a teacher for the School District of Lancaster, where she remained for more than three decades. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Ms. Dourte aligned herself with the Teachers' Group in Pennsylvania.
Outside of her primary career endeavors, Ms. Dourte served as club president of the Lancaster Red Rose Optimist Club and the Lancaster Optimist Club, and governor of its Atlantic Central District in 2006-2007. She was also a Sergeant-at-Arms for 20 years along her husband Will's side for 34 years. She is an Optimist International certified trainer for all levels.
For her efforts, as well as her career accomplishments, Ms. Dourte was bestowed with a Plaque of Appreciation and has been inducted into the Optimist International Hall of Fame.
In accounting for her success, Ms. Dourte credits her ability to share with others, as well as a willingness to listen to the ideas of both her students and colleagues. Though her career has been filled with highlights, she is most proud of the relationships she has built with special needs students, many of whom are normally unable to form relationships with other students and teachers. Looking toward the future, Ms. Dourte intends to continue her work with Optimist International.
