Now retired, Dr. Ossoff is a professor emeritus of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Vanderbilt University and a retired physician who was affiliated with Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He taught on campus for more than three decades between 1986 and 2018 and practiced medicine for more than 40 years. During his tenure at the Center, Dr. Ossoff was notably responsible for the establishment of an advanced training laryngology fellowship program in 1992.
Among his many roles, Dr. Ossoff served as the executive medical director at the Vanderbilt Voice Center from 1991 onward, during which time he found success as a consultant and attending physician at several area hospitals. Furthermore, he worked as the chief of the division of otolaryngology at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois, and the director of the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center of Otolaryngology Communication Sciences in Nashville, Tennessee. Prior to teaching at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Ossoff garnered a reputation at Northwestern University, as an assistant professor in the dental school and as an associate professor in the medical school between 1980 and 1986.
Widely published, Dr. Ossoff edited eight medical books, including "Complications in Head and Neck Surgery" through W.B. Saunders Co. in 1993 and "The Larynx" through Lippincott Williams and Wilkins in 2002. He also contributed 60 book chapters and over 160 scholarly articles to various professional journals. Additionally, Dr. Ossoff was the editor-in-chief of Lasers in Surgery and Medicine between the years of 1987 and 2005 and served in other editorial roles for various other medical publications. He is presently the laryngology section editor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and has also found success on the editorial board of the Archives of Otolaryngology.
To better serve his community, Dr. Ossoff was a trustee for the Midwest Biolaser Institute in Chicago, the Leadership Nashville and Nashville Leadership Music. He also served in numerous board directorships, including for the Laser Institute of America and the RiverBend Motorcoach Resort Condominium Association Inc.
Dr. Ossoff prepared for his medical career by attaining a Bachelor of Arts at Bowdoin College in 1969. He subsequently studied at Tufts University, where he received a Doctor of Medicine in dentistry in 1973 and a medical degree in 1975. Further educational pursuits to his credit included an internship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, a residency in otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery at Northwestern University Medical School, a National Institutes of Health research fellowship in otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery, a clinical fellowship in head and neck surgery, and a junior faculty clinical fellowship at Northwestern University Medical School between 1975 and 1984. Additionally, Dr. Ossoff earned a Master of Science in otolaryngology from Northwestern University in 1981. Eminently qualified in his field, he is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.
To further advance his career, Dr. Ossoff has been extensively involved with various professional organizations, namely the American College of Surgeons as an elected fellow, a former board governor, and a former advisory council member of otorhinolaryngology. He has served in countless other roles with the American Laryngological Association, where he also received several honors, including the James Newcomb Award in 2007, the Triological Society as a past president and 2006 Presidential Citation Award recipient, the American Medical Association, the Society of University Otolaryngologists Head and Neck Surgeons, the American Broncho-Esophagological Association, among other societies.
Dr. Ossoff's illustrious career earned him several recognitions, beginning with a National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health for 1977 to 1978. He also received the Francis L. Lederer-Norval H. Pierce Award from the Chicago Laryngology and Otolaryngology Society in 1978 and was the guest of honor at the First European Carbon Dioxide Laser Surgery Course and Workshop in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery in Roskilde, Denmark, in 1984. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Ossoff has been showcased in close to 80 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World.
