NEW HAVEN, CT, November 23, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Jon Soderstrom, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Soderstrom celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Having found success as the managing director of university technology commercialization and faculty innovation at Yale University, Dr. Soderstrom initially joined the prestigious institution in 1996. His responsibilities, which include the oversight of commercialization strategies of inventions or the translation of strategies made in the laboratories, involves patent filing and licensing, as well as the development of business partnerships with those interested in collaborating with faculty members on starting new ventures. In doing so, Dr. Soderstrom works closely with venture capitalists to secure investments in startups from Yale, assists in hiring, identifying suitable lab space and more. Above all, he works to ensure engagement with faculty to develop or translate technology both effectively and efficiently.
Since joining Yale, Dr. Soderstrom has been involved in forming dozens of new ventures, which have exceeded over $1 billion in investment capital. Serving as a board director of such organizations as Arvinas Inc., Kolltan Pharmaceuticals, Artizan Biosciences, Iconic Therapeutics, and Protometrix, his success has included his contributions to the creation of royalty monetarization, which is the ability to sell future royalties to investors. This concept was based on an invention that Yale University developed in collaboration with Bristol Myers Squibb. Joining forces with Pablo Legoretta who created the industry, these future royalties were able to fund forthcoming facilities at Yale to conduct more research.
Prior to his tenure at the university, Dr. Soderstrom spent more than 15 years in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He also served as the director of program development for Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation from 1994 to 1996 and as the director of technology commercialization for Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inc. between 1984 and 1994. He was also a research staff member for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) from 1980 until 1984. Outside of his full-time work, Dr. Soderstrom lent his expertise as a consultant in his field and as an expert witness in patent infringement litigations. He also testified before Congress several times regarding technology transfer issues.
In 1986, Dr. Soderstrom co-authored "Impacts of Hazardous Technology: The Psycho-Social Effects of Restarting TMI-I (SUNY series in Environmental Public Policy)" with John Sorenson, Emily Copenhaver, and Sam Cornes. He also wrote "Social Impact Assessment" in 1981. Other writing contributions to his credit have included writing numerous refereed articles in scholarly journals and chapters to books. Throughout the course of his illustrious career, Dr. Soderstrom also became a frequent speaker at professional conferences and seminars all over the U.S. and abroad, covering topics on the technology commercialization process and economic development.
In contributing to his community, Dr. Soderstrom most notably established Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties, an organization that consists of a collection of churches and volunteers that work together to help families in need throughout seven Appalachian counties of Tennessee. He is an elder of Christ Chapel of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Madison, Connecticut, and a former director of the Kern United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, Enterprise Center of New Haven, as well as the United Way of Anderson County in Oak Ridge.
Dr. Soderstrom studied at Hope College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1976. He also completed a Doctor of Philosophy at Northwestern University in 1980 and is a certified licensing professional. His decision to study the field stemmed from his childhood, during which time he grew up among a family of inventors and engineers. Once Dr. Soderstrom entered college, he seized the opportunity to work as a student at the ORNL, where he studied technology and translated it to his experiences in the marketplace.
Driven to remain aware of developments in the field, Dr. Soderstrom is a member of the Licensing Executive Society. Likewise, he is a past president of both the Association of Federal Technology Transfer Executives and the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). Dr. Soderstrom is also a former pledge master of Omicron Kappa Epsilon.
Presented with several awards for his commitment to the field, Dr. Soderstrom received the AUTM Bayh-Dole Award in 2014. Others accolades to his credit have included a Distinguished Alumni Award from Hope College in 2011, an Elm/Ivy Award from the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven in 1999 and an Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer from the Federal Laboratory Consortium in 1986. Additionally, Dr. Soderstrom was named as the 87th Point of Light by President George H. W.
