A devoted educator, Dr. Ake-Little has excelled as the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, a role he accepted in 2020. Having garnered ample experience in teaching, he has developed campaigns to organize non-traditional workplaces and cultivated partnerships with education advocacy nonprofits designed to promote teacher professionalism and participation in state level education policy. Among numerous additional tasks, Dr. Ake-Little has created and implemented three education programs: the Labor Leadership Program for new and rising local officers, the GOVT 101 series for member civic engagement, and the Instructional Training for Education to support members in online learning.
Prior to his position with the American Federation of Teachers, Dr. Ake-Little taught as an adjunct instructor at Temple University in 2019, where he previously served as a graduate research assistant and the president of the Temple University Graduate Students Association (AFT Local #6290) between 2016 and 2018. In 2019, he worked as the Assistant Director of STEM Academies for the School District of Pennsylvania. Dr. Ake-Little was previously active as an Upper School biology teacher at the Agnes Irwin School from 2014 to 2016 and a biology teacher at the Charter High School for Architecture and Design from 2011 to 2013.
Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. Ake-Little is the author of multiple research studies and commentary pieces which address policy and practice in K-12 and higher education. Published work to his credit include "In Defense of Standardized Testing in Admissions" in The Chronicle of Higher Education and "Fixing a Liberal Arts Education Requires a Standardized Curriculum" in the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal in 2019. In 2018, he penned "Closing the Loop Between K-12 and Higher Education Teaching & Learning" in Education Week, "Why Graduate Student Unionization Matters Even More in the Age of Janus" in New Politics Magazine and "The Case for More Asian-American Public School Teachers" in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Additionally, Dr. Ake-Little contributed "School Choice and American Society in the Age of Trump," in the Berkeley Review of Education in 2017.
Finding great success throughout the course of his career, Dr. Ake-Little was the recipient of the Politics of Education Association 2020 Outstanding Dissertation Finalist Award from the American Educational Research Association. He was likewise presented with the Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award for New Teachers from the National Science Teachers Association in 2014. Dr. Ake-Little was also recognized with the President's Volunteer Service Award from The Franklin Institute of Science in 2010 and the A. William Salamone Award from the Drexel University College of Arts & Sciences in 2005, alongside numerous scholarships and research grants.
Dr. Ake-Little fondly recalls seizing the opportunity to become a substitute teacher, having realized his true passion was for teaching. Upon earning a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Drexel University in 2006, he was working as a paralegal and was on the path to becoming a lawyer until he was offered the aforementioned substitute teaching position. He later obtained a Master of Education in Secondary Science Education from Chestnut Hill College in 2013 as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Education and Educational Leadership from Temple University in 2019. Dr. Ake-Little is further affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management.
