Leading a successful career in electrical engineering and academia, Dr. Hazeltine has spent over five decades at Brown University, an Ivy League research university in Providence, Rhode Island. Acquired in 1959, he was a professor of engineering and served as an assistant and associate dean. Today, he continues to lecture as a professor emeritus. A seasoned researcher, Dr. Hazeltine has focused his studies on engineering management, technology planning, particularly in developing countries, and similar topics. He was also a lecturer and visiting professor at several international institutions, including the University of Zambia, the University of Malawi, the University of Botswana and Africa University-Mutare.
Apart from his full-time academic endeavors, Dr. Hazeltine consulted for the Rhode Island Utilities Commission, the New Jersey Department of Higher Education and the U.S. Naval Academy. He also consulted and served as an assistant to the manager of the research laboratory in the space and information system division at Raytheon Company. Additionally, Dr. Hazeltine was influential overseas as both a lecturer and consultant in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, and, among other countries, Thailand.
Dr. Hazeltine has published several books, including "Introduction to Electronic Circuits and Applications" in 1980, "Appropriate Technology: Tools, Choice and Implications" in 1998, and "Field Guide to Appropriate Technology" in 2003. He is presently working on completing the second edition of his book, "Field Guide," which he hopes to complete by 2022. Dr. Hazeltine notably holds a patent for a color recognition system.
A leader in education, Dr. Hazeltine was a trustee for Stevens Institute of Technology between 1997 and 2007. He also served on the advisory committees at Baylor University, Roger Williams University and the State University of New York (SUNY)-Stony Brook, on the finance committee and as a board member at the Paul Cuffee Charter School. Dr. Hazeltine also made a difference as the vice chairman of the Council for Understanding of Technology in Human Affairs, where he notably published the organization's publication, The Weaver, for eight years as its editor.
Dr. Hazeltine received both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in engineering at Princeton University in 1953 and 1956, respectively. He also acquired a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Michigan in 1962. Well qualified in his field, Dr. Hazeltine was registered as a professional engineer in the state of Rhode Island.
Professor Hazeltine is best known for his teaching. He received the teaching award, voted on by the graduating class, at thirteen Brown University Commencements. The award was then named after him and he is no longer eligible. His teaching has been recognized in other ways. Two professorial chairs at Brown University are endowed in his name. The Commons room in a new Engineering Research Center bears his name. During the academic year 1991-1992, he held the Robert Foster Cherry Chair for Distinguished Teaching at Baylor University. SUNY-Stony Brook bestowed an Honorary Doctor of Science on Dr. Hazeltine in 1988 and the Brown University Faculty awarded him the Susan Colver Rosenberger medal in 2015. A bottle cap from a well-known beverage company states "Professor Hazeltine was one of Tom and Tom's favorite Professors at Brown University."
