Driven by a passion for chemistry and physics, Dr. Vogt earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Eberhard Karls University of Tubingen in 1986. Two years later, he began his career as a scientist at the Institute Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France, where he remained active until 1992. Subsequently, he gained valuable expertise in his field as an associate physicist, physicist and group leader at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Additionally, Dr. Vogt has served as an international research fellow with the University of Sydney, a fellow with the Institute of Advanced Study at Durham University and as a faculty member with the African University of Science and Technology.
An expert in his field, Dr. Vogt works today as an adjunct professor of philosophy, the director of the Nanocenter, and a distinguished professor of chemistry and biochemistry with the University of South Carolina. In his numerous capacities, he has taught both undergraduate and graduate classes, including solid-state materials chemistry – a subject on which he co-wrote a textbook. Dr. Vogt is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and the Neutron Scattering Society of America, and a member of the American Chemical Society.
Outside of his primary endeavors, Dr. Vogt is an endowed chair of the Educational Foundation and was recognized as a Carolina Trustee Professor for the University of South Carolina. For his outstanding body of work, he earned the Research and Development 100 Award through Research and Development Magazine, a Design & Engineering Award, and the 2019 Education Foundation Award in Science, Mathematics and Engineering. In the near future, Dr. Vogt aims to write a book for upper level undergraduate and graduate students which serves as an introduction to the history and philosophy of chemistry. He also intends to continue his work in high-resolution electron microscopy.
