Carol L. Niemeyer Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Animal Research

Ms. Niemeyer has found success in the study of primate behavior in the Amazon, Scotland and in the United States

PORTLAND, OR, December 02, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Carol L. Niemeyer has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Ms. Niemeyer initially obtained a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, from the University of California Berkeley in 1971 with an individual honors major in "Evolutionary and Comparative Behavior and Biology." During this time, she focused her studies on animal behavior and biology; particularly primate behavior. Ms. Niemeyer later concluded her education with a Master of Science in Psychology, focusing on non-human primate behavior, from the University of Stirling in Scotland in 1980.

From 1970 to 1974, Ms. Niemeyer began her career as a zookeeper for the Franklin Park Children's Zoo, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and the National Zoological Park at the Smithsonian Institution. Her responsibilities included caring for and teaching the public about animals as well as the daily care, husbandry and maintenance of all types of exotic animals. In 1976, Ms. Niemeyer served as a primate behavior field research associate in the Amazon rainforest in Peru, where she assisted in a study of the ecology and feeding behavior of titi monkeys.

Ms. Niemeyer returned to the Amazon from 1987 to 1988 as the director of a wildlife rehabilitation center, directing American interns and Peruvian staff in releasing various native wildlife back into the jungle. As a research technician with the Dallas Zoo from 1988 to 1990, she handled the design, implementation, data collection, tabulation and analysis of behavior studies on various groups of primates. She also created and introduced innovative cage furniture to enrich match primates' environments, in order to promote naturalistic behavior. Soon thereafter, Ms. Niemeyer served as a behavioral researcher with the Oregon Zoo in Portland from 1993 to 1994.

Ms. Niemeyer made an impact as a Primate Behavior Technician and Animal Behavior Supervisor with the Oregon National Primate Research Center from 1994 to 2002. In this position, she assisted in improving the psychological well-being of primates under study, which involved preventing/treating distress as much as possible, utilizing positive reinforcement to encourage primates to cooperate with researchers, and managing social pairings and groupings of primates. Ms. Niemeyer was also responsible for instituting procedures to identify and alleviate abnormal and self-destructive behaviors, adding fruits and vegetables to primates' diets, supervising technicians, interns, and volunteers, and chairing the aforementioned research center's Psychological Well-Being Committee.

Ms. Niemeyer attributes her success to her parents for instilling within her the importance of hard work. She became involved in her profession because she was inspired by the works of Jane Goodall, the renowned English primatologist. She considers her career highlight to be graduating with her Master's degree from the University of Stirling, Scotland. In the coming years, Ms. Niemeyer is hoping to write a memoir about her experiences in the Amazon jungle, the zoos in which she has worked, and the programs with the Oregon National Primate Research Center. She would like to help other people interpret non-human primate behavior.
