Driven to pursue a career in the sciences, Dr. Kohls studied at the University of Notre Dame. After discovering that he no longer wanted to be a physicist, which had been his dream, he decided to shift his focus toward mathematics. He eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in mathematics from the University of Rochester in 1953. Over the course of the following years, Dr. Kohls furthered his expertise in the field with a Master of Science (1955) and a Doctor of Philosophy (1957) in mathematics from Purdue University, where he also served as a teaching assistant. For his research ability he was awarded a National Science Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship in 1955 and a Purdue Research Foundation Fellowship in 1956, and in 1957 served as a research associate on professor Leonal Gillman's NSF contract.
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Dr. Kohls excelled as an instructor for Columbia University and an assistant professor for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Soon thereafter, he worked in similar positions with Syracuse University, with which he currently remains designated as professor emeritus. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Kohls is affiliated with the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematics Association of America and Phi Beta Kappa.
In light of his outstanding breadth of knowledge, Dr. Kohls has written and co-authored over 20 research papers published in leading professional journals.
