Dr. Kung's seminal contribution in biotechnology was on the first monoclonal antibody drug in history approved by US FDA in 1986. His invention, known as "Muromonab -CD-3" was given to reduce acute rejection in patients with organ transplants. Since its historical FDA approval, monoclonal antibody technology soon attracted many more inventors to this new biotech platform and made novel drugs in treating numerous unmet medical needs. The impact of this seminal contribution to science and economy is monumental. Dr. Kung is the inventor and co-inventor of over 100 US patents. In addition to Muromonab -CD-3, or Orthoclone OKT3, Dr. Kung created a novel set of CD3/CD4/CD8, (the OKT Series) etc., molecular markers for T cell typing in the diagnosis of AIDs progression, blood cancers, and immune disorders. Dr. Kung was invited to speak at numerous international and national meetings on clinical immunology and contributed over 100 articles to Science, Nature, Journal of Biochemistry, and Journal of Immunology.
Dr. Kung has been the Director of KCJ Capital since 2007. He previously served as CEO and a Board Director of PhytoCeutica, Inc. in New Haven, CT from 1999 to 2003, the Founder and Executive Vice President of T Cell Sci., Inc./Avant Immunotherapies, Inc. in Cambridge, MA from 1984 to 1996, and Vice President of Research of Centocor Inc. in Malvern, PA from 1981 to 1984. He was a senior research fellow at Ortho Pharmaceutical Co. and J&J in Raritan, New Jersey from 1978 to 1981 and a Research Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, from 1974 to 1977. He earned a Ph.D from the University California, Berkeley in 1974 and a BS from Fu Jen University in Taipei, Taiwan/China in 1968.
Civically, he served on Suzanne Middle School's School Site Council since 2020, as a trustee of Brookline, MA's Park School, from 1992 to 1995, and on the Executive Board of the College of Letters and Science at U C Berkeley from 1989 to 1991. Dr. Kung is the recipient of the Philip Hoffman Award from Johnson & Johnson Co. in 1979. He was named a W.H.O. Scholar Lecturer in Immunology at Beijing Medical University, Beijing, China in 1985, received an Achievement Award from the Chinese Institute of Engineers in 1988 and a Citation from the U.S. Senate in 1991. Additionally, he was honored with the Discoverers Award from the U.S. Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Research Association in 1991, and the Thomas Alva Edison Award from the New Jersey Research Council in 1991. Most recently, he received the Albert Nelson Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. He is a member of the AAAS and the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America, for which he served as president of the bio/pharm. sci. division in 1994-1995.
