For more than 45 years, Mr. Spencer has been involved in real estate as the chief executive officer and principal broker of Mid-Atlantic Commercial Realty. Headquartered in Yorktown, Virginia, his firm, originally known as Poquoson Realty, began as a regional provider of commercial real estate in 1975. Having seen exponential growth over the years by incorporating residential real estate in the firm's portfolio, Mid-Atlantic is now recognized as a top five power broker in the region by Co-Star for its ventures in land acquisition, development, and its real estate brokerage activities. It is also notably the Hampton Roads affiliate of TCN Worldwide.
Specializing in residential, commercial and developmental realty, Mr. Spencer's expertise encompasses development of subdivisions, corporate office buildings and industrial buildings, as well as shopping centers. During his career, he has been involved in the development of over 50 residential communities containing several thousand dwelling units including seven retirement communities. Today, Mr. Spencer's successful brokerage firm employs 12 residential and 15 commercial agents, as well as a staff of five that includes managers to oversee the agents in each division.
Mr. Spencer has contributed to his local community by serving as the York County Representative on the executive board of Peninsula Alliance for Economic Development, as a member of the Peninsula Ports Authority of Virginia, and as a member of the York County Comprehensive Plan Committee. He was a former co-chairman of fund raising for the nearby Boys and Girls Club and has also served on the board of the Peninsula United Way. His professional involvement includes serving as President of the Peninsula Housing and Builder Association, serving the Home Builders of Virginia Legislative Committee, and as local chairman of the Political Action Committee for the building industry. He has been recognized as Builder of the Year by the Peninsula Housing and Builders Association in 1983 and1988. He has been a member of the Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors, including as a member of the state of National Association and is on the board of directors of the peninsula division of Towne Bank.
After high school, Mr. Spencer studied at the University of Mississippi, where he attained a Bachelor of Arts in political science, psychology and history in 1968. He credits his success in business to having a plan, implementing that business plan coupled with hard work, great friends and associates, a lot of good luck and being surrounded by a supportive family.
