After experiencing a life-changing event during the late 1980s, Ms. Matthews knew she must do something to warn others of significant, potentially disabling health risks. Before writing her first book, she sent a single page Tip Sheet to several publishers, and one of the ten gave her the chance to get her work published and distributed to the public, which began her career as a writer. Over the course of her outstanding career, she has focused the themes of her books on periods in the Americas prior to the Ice Age, a subject she researched in depth for five years before writing and then continued.
As a writer and the owner of Books by Bonnye, Ms. Matthews has released a number of publications, including the five-novel book series "Winds of Change." Books in this series are: Ki'ti's Story, 75,000 BC (2012), Manak-na's Story, 75,000 BC (2013), Zamimolo's Story, 50,000 BC (2014), Tuksook's Story, 35,000 BC (2014), and The SealEaters, 20,000 BC (2015). Alongside this series, she has also authored novellas in a series with the focus on archaeological sites in the Americas. These site-focused are novellas, Freedom, 250,000 BC: Out from the Shadow of Popocatepetl (2016), Courage: The Boqueirao Refuge at Pedra Furada, 48,000 BC (2017), and Integrity, 130,000 BC (2018). Finally, she added a tiny book with a long title summarizing her view of the peopling of the Americas after her research, People in the Americas before the Last Ice Age Glaciation Concluded: An Emerging Western Hemisphere Population Origin Paradigm.
Prior to becoming a writer, Ms. Matthews gained valuable professional expertise as a junior and high school teacher, a homeschool teacher for one daughter, a commercial casualty underwriter for an insurance company and in personal management evaluation and organization planning from which she created a program for organizational audits and performed for three regional agencies. An expert in her field, she holds a Bachelor of Science in English and education from Virginia Commonwealth University, which she obtained in 1965. To remain aware of changes in the field of writing, she aligns herself with Alaska Professional Communicators, the Alaska Writers Guild, and the National Federation of Press Women.
In light of her outstanding breadth of knowledge, Ms. Matthews has received several awards through Alaska Professional Communicators, including five First Place for Fiction Awards between 2013 and 2017 and a Second Place for Fiction Award in 2015. She also earned two First Place Awards, two Second Place Awards and an Honorable Mention from the National Federation of Press Women.
Her newest book, Arctic Dinosaurs of Alaska is due out December 2021 or January 2022. It is a middle grade fiction/interdisciplinary text on Arctic dinosaurs. The book is not a coloring book but is designed for children to color with fifty plus images. There will be a paperback, hardcover, and a Library Edition with some pages online for those where coloring in books is not acceptable or desired. This takes her career from education to other fields and back to education, a rekindled love. Finally, her work in process is Sanctuary: In His Pocket, as she puts it, "The hardest job I ever had."
Although her career has been filled with highlights, Ms. Matthews emphasizes that she attributes her accomplishments to her faith in and guidance from the Lord.
