Dr. Eisler has served with distinction as the president of Ferris State University in Big Rapids since 2003, the longest-serving president after the university's founder, Woodbridge N. Ferris. Under his leadership, Ferris State University has instituted ambitious programs, overhauling and updating curricula, renovating classrooms and facilities and instituting cooperative programs with local high schools. Dr. Eisler spearheaded 15 new major building projects totaling $400 million in which older buildings were acquired and renovated while the new Michigan College of Optometry, the University Center, a new residence hall and the $29.5 million Center for Virtual Learning all began construction. Meanwhile, Ferris State University's student retention rate has increased 5 percent from 2003 to 2019, and the school's four-year graduation rate rose from 28% in 28% in 2004 to 38% in 2020.
During Dr. Eisler's presidency, the Ferris Foundation, responsible for receiving, investing and distributing endowment gifts, has grown from $18 million to over $100 million. The aforementioned university was honored as the first Uncommon Greatness Award winner by the Center for Community Leadership of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Eisner garnered recognition as the Newsmaker of the Year in Education by the Grand Rapids Business Journal. Moreover, he has further earned the Albertus Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Who's Who International.
In partnership with the American Association of State College and Universities and the New York Times, Dr. Eisler helped create the American Democracy Project, a network of more than 295 state colleges and universities focused on public higher education's role in preparing the next generation of informed, engaged citizens. Moreover, he was chosen to present the President to Presidents Lecture to his nearly 400 presidential colleagues of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities in 2018. Dr. Eisler is an inductee of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance Hall of Fame and the Ferris State University Welding Engineering Technology Hall of Fame, was celebrated as the Volunteer of the Year for the Community Services Center and accepted the Exemplary Collaboration Award from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.
A classical clarinetist, Dr. Eisler earned a Bachelor of Music in 1972 and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1978, both with high distinction, and a Master of Music, summa cum laude, from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut in 1975. He intends to retire in 2022 after a nearly 50-year career in higher education. Dr. Eisler's retirement statement reads, "While I may be retiring, I will always be a Bulldog."
