Now retired, Mr. Carneal served as a professor of American and Asian history at Northwest Missouri State University between 1968 and 2002. He earned the title of distinguished emeritus professor in 2020. Throughout the length of his tenure, Mr. Carneal is most proud to have organized the Japanese Studies Association, which conducts month-long seminars that include experts from both Japan and the United States, who teach specially selected students on the subject of Japanese history.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Carneal served from 1953 until 1956 in the U.S. Army. Following this period, he obtained a Master of Arts from the University of Missouri in 1965, and ABD in 1980, and subsequently worked as a professor at the Kemper Military School. Among his career accomplishments, Mr. Carneal most notably worked on behalf of the Local Historical Society, to which he significantly contributed in the form of leadership, new facilities and a greatly expanded budget.
Mr. Carneal was also a member of the Nodaway County Historical Society. For his contributions, he has been decorated for national defense by the U.S. Army, and earned a Good Conduct and German Occupation Medal. In accounting for his success, Mr. Carneal credits his ability to form worthwhile connections with both his colleagues and students.
