For more than 20 years, Ms. McKenzie found tremendous success as a special education teacher with the New York City Department of Education (DOE). Prior to her employment with the DOE in 1991, she taught English as a second language in her native country of Guyana, where she additionally completed a Bachelor's Degree with a major in English and a minor in History, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education. She worked as a lecturer in language, literature and methodology at the Cyril Potter College of Education in Guyana. She was also an assistant examiner in English in Barbados at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) The Garrison, St. Michael, Barbados, West Indies. Upon her relocation to the United States, Ms. McKenzie achieved a Master of Education in Special Education from Long Island University and a Master of Science in English as a Second Language from The College of New Rochelle.
Since her retirement from the DOE in 2011, Ms. McKenzie has continued to thrive as an early intervention specialist on a part-time basis. She has also excelled as a teacher and Director of the Young People's Development where she successfully tutored a student in winning the Youth Night Award in three districts before she retired. Moreover, Ms. McKenzie remains active in a variety of community programs designed for senior citizens.
In recognition of her invaluable contributions to the advancement of her church, Allen Memorial (AME), Ms. McKenzie was honored with a certificate for professionalism and dedicated service in 2000. She attributes her success to her natural desire to succeed, which she actively strives to instill in her children and grandchildren. In the coming years, Ms. McKenzie intends to continue exercising her passion for helping others while serving as a mentor to younger members of her community.
