A renowned scientist, researcher and educator, Dr. Ojima boasts an international career within his chosen field of chemistry. At the start of his career journey, he matriculated at The University of Tokyo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1968, a Master of Science in organic chemistry in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry in 1973. Subsequently, from 1973 to 1983 he served as a senior research fellow at the Sagami Institute of Chemical Research in Sagamihara, Kanagawa, Japan.
Since 1995, Dr. Ojima has provided superior service as a distinguished professor of chemistry with the State University of New York at Stony Brook (now Stony Brook University) and as the founding director of its Institute of Chemical Biology & Drug Discovery. Previously, he served the university as a leading professor from 1991 to 1995, full professor from 1984 to 1991 and associate professor in 1983 and 1984. From 1997 to 2003, he chaired the department, and since 2016 he has also served as the president of the Stony Brook University Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors. Additionally, Dr. Ojima had been a visiting professor at Université Claude Bernard Lyon I in Lyon, France in 1983, The University of Tokyo in 1996, The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California and Université de Paris XI in Châtenay-Malabry, France, both in 1997.
Finding vast success throughout the course of his career, Dr. Ojima's honors include elected fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, the American Chemical Society, the New York Academy of Science, the American Association of the Advancement of Science and the John S. Guggenheim Foundation. Dr. Ojima was abundantly recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS) with its prestigious National Awards. He was the recipient of the Ernest Guenther Award in the Chemistry of Natural Products in 2019, the ACS Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry in 2013, the Emanuel B. Hershberg Award in 2001 and the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award in 1994. He was inducted to the ACS Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame in 2007. In addition, he received the Chemical Society of Japan Award (highest honor in this Society) in 1999 and the National Young Investigator's Award in 1976 from the Chemical Society of Japan.
