With many years of experience in the field of nursing to her credit, Ms. Schissel was drawn toward her professional path by her mother, who had not been able to pursue her own aspirations of becoming a nurse due to her illness. Ms. Schissel initially pursued an education at the University of Iowa then she continued her formal nursing education at the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Phoenix, from which she graduated with a diploma in nursing. In the years that followed, Ms. Schissel refined her skills through surveyor workshops via the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, business coursework at Santa Fe Community College and Biannual State and National Correctional Education Conferences.
Certified as a Correctional Health Professional by the National Commission of Correctional Health Care, Ms. Schissel has excelled in many different positions throughout her career, including as a staff registered emergency room nurse, medical surgical nurse and ophthalmology nurse. She was a consulting registered nurse for San Diego County, a legal expert and witness in her areas of expertise and the Assistant Statewide Chief Nurse Executive for California Prison Health Care Services. With CMS, she found further success as a traveling nursing administration consultant, a Regional Director of Nursing for New Mexico and the Director of Nursing. Likewise, Ms. Schissel served as the Director of Nursing and acting Medical Administrator for state penitentiaries for the state of New Mexico as well as a Supervising Nurse, Chief Nurse and Director of Nursing (their first) for the County of San Diego's Sheriff Medical Services.
Beyond her primary responsibilities, Ms. Schissel has participated in numerous endeavors within her professional circles. A former surveyor for accreditation standards in prison for the National Commission on Correctional Health Care and the Institute for Medical Quality, she worked independently for the Department of Justice for Sheriffs with the National Institute of Corrections, for which she traveled across the country to help improve medical service teams. Ms. Schissel has also contributed to the board of New Mexico Catholic Charities, a council for Santa Maria de la Paz Parish, the board and architectural committee for the San Diego County California Homeowners Association and the school board for Our Lady of the Wayside, for which she was elected as the president.
Ms. Schissel has proudly volunteered in the past as a volunteer school nurse and emergency nursing staff coordinator. Moreover, she has provided her wealth of knowledge to myriad articles published in professional journals in her respective disciplines, in addition to the training video "Principles of Correctional Nursing" for San Diego State University and the book "Essentials of Correctional Nursing." Ms. Schissel has additionally become prolific as a public speaker, having conducted such lauded presentations as "Nurses, Doctors and Their Legal Obligations" and "Security and Medical Working Together."
Ms. Schissel has been associated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. To wit, she has been involved with the California and Nevada chapters of the American Correctional Health Services Association for more than 15 years. Furthermore, Ms. Schissel has been affiliated with the American Nurses Association, the New Mexico Nurses Association, the American Correctional Association, the American Jail Association, the American Sheriff Association and the Academy of Correctional Health Professionals.
In light of her undertakings, Ms. Schissel has accrued several accolades. In 2003, she was presented with the National Distinguished Service Award from the American Correctional Health Services Association, a humbling achievement that she cites among the highlights of her career. The following year, she was recognized as the Most Valuable Manager by the County of San Diego Sheriff Medical Services. Likewise, Ms. Schissel is proud of maintaining her marriage while handling her responsibilities with her long-distance commuting jobs for more than 55 years.
Attributing her success to her persistence and passion for her work, Ms. Schissel fondly recalls working with law enforcement and mental health professionals in the aid of individual patients and program development. She also is grateful to have helped change the treatment of patients who were not cared for in a humane or respectful manner. Looking toward the future, Ms. Schissel hopes to devote her spare time to her family while enjoying her well-deserved retirement.
