Mr. Pinkerton has served as a minister of music and fine art at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh since 2002. The aforementioned music ministry serves the church by establishing participation, leadership, and musical excellence. Mr. Pinkerton has also been active as the director of the Southminster Ringers since 2002, who have performed classical and popular repertoire as well as folk songs and compositions. The Southminster Ringers have notably played before churches, schools, governmental and nonprofit organizations, on television and at The White House.
Leading a long and successful tenure in the industry, Mr. Pinkerton notably found success in his position as the director of music at First United Methodist Church in Akron, Ohio from 1987 to 2002. He was also appointed as the associate director of music at First United Methodist Church in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio from 1984 to 1987 and the director of music at Messiah Lutheran Church in Fairview Park, Ohio from 1982 to 1984. Mr. Pinkerton further worked as an adjunct instructor at Kent State University in Ohio from 1993 to 1997.
Mr. Pinkerton had the opportunity to travel to several foreign countries, including Africa, Czechia, Romania and Lithuania, where he experienced listening to incredible musicians, playing handbells and teaching music. His incredible career in the field was inspired when he would travel to Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan to see movies as a child. Mr. Pinkerton fondly recalls his fascination with the organists at the esteemed venue and became enamored with the idea of playing music for a large audience.
Civically, Mr. Pinkerton has contributed to the Pittsburgh Change Ringing Guild as a treasurer since 2002. He has also been involved with the International Children's Aids Foundation since 2014, an organization that supports orphans at Casa Emanuel in Romania. Mr. Pinkerton travels to the orphanage often, experiences in which he helps with Vacation Bible School, teaches handbell ringing, plays with the children and accompanies the children and staff in visiting water parks and other fun places.
Mr. Pinkerton initially studied at Bucknell University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in mathematics, music and computer engineering in 1982. Two years later, he obtained a Master of Music in organ performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1984. A professional member of the American Guild of Organists, for which he served as dean from 1988 to 1990 and an executive committee member from 2003 to 2008, he is also affiliated the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers and the American Choral Directors Association. Recognized as an honorary citizen in Ratiboř, Czech Republic in 2015, Mr. Pinkerton returns to Ratiboř each summer to teach handbell techniques and English. Mr. Pinkerton was been cited in the 60th edition of Who's Who in America.
