Affiliated with OrthoAlabama Spine and Sports since 2013, Dr. Gilmer serves alongside a talented team of physicians that specialize in orthopedic care for area residents. As an orthopedic surgeon and foot and ankle specialist, she bears a particular focus in the surgical and nonsurgical care for the foot, ankle, and knee, and is well versed in joint replacement and revision, orthopedic trauma and sports medicine. Responsible for the overall care of her patients, Dr. Gilmer also oversees various daily aspects of the running the practice.
Dr. Gilmer received a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Bachelor of Science in biology at Birmingham-Southern College in 2003. She subsequently acquired a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Alabama, Birmingham School of Medicine, in 2007. Additional educational pursuits to her credit include a residency in orthopedic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston from 2007 to 2012 and a foot and ankle surgery fellowship in orthopedic, athletic and reconstructive research at the University of Texas Health Science Center between 2012 and 2013. Well qualified in her field, Dr. Gilmer has been certified in orthopedic surgery through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery since 2015.
The first female orthopedic surgeon to join her practice, Dr. Gilmer credits much of her success on her perseverance and ability to overcome doubt. Active as an elected fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, she is a member of several leading professional organizations, including the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the Jefferson County Medical Society.
Engaged with several local athletic organizations, Dr. Gilmer presently serves as the head coach for the Mountain Brook (since its inception in 2019) with the Alabama chapter of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. She is also a coach for Red Mountain Composite, a middle and high school bike racing team, since 2014. A competitive athlete, Dr. Gilmer races mountain bikes, plays ultimate Frisbee, and runs local races several times per year. Aside from her coaching responsibilities, she has also been active with various breast cancer awareness events, educational programs and the Women's March.
