Born in Glen Cove, NY, Mr. Salter later lived in Silver Spring and Wheaton, MD. He attended grade and high school in the Montgomery County, MD school system, graduating from Wheaton High School in 1956.
He joined the United States Navy Reserve while a senior in high school and later volunteered for active service in the fall of 1956; he served aboard the USS Saratoga CVA 60 from January 1956 to October 1958. From birth until he entered the Navy, he was known as Sonny. While in the Navy, he picked up the name Wes (his initials).
He holds an Associates Degree in Electrical Technology.
Since 1963, Mr. Salter has excelled with Fairchild Aircraft, advancing from a technician to the senior director of tests and evaluations with the premier aircraft and aerospace manufacturing company. He has also worked as a service technician with the Dictaphone Corporation and as an electronic test technician with Emerson Research Laboratory. Moreover, Mr. Salter is a member of the Institute of Environmental Sciences.
Among his major professional accomplishments, Mr. Salter has been incredibly proud of his work for Fairchild on the STS 41-C Solar Maximum Repair Mission, the fifth mission of the space shuttle Challenger that took place in April 1984. During the mission, Challenger's crew captured and repaired the malfunctioning Solar Maximum Mission ("Solar Max") satellite and deployed the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) experimental apparatus. Soon thereafter, he received a certificate signed by the mission crew, Commander Robert Crippen, pilot Francis Scobee and specialists Terry Hart, James van Hoften and George Nelson.
Mr. Salter is a former youth sports coach and active member of the PTA. He is past president of his local chapter of the Izaak Walton League and a life member of the NRA. He has volunteered with People Helping People where he served as transportation coordinator.
Mr. Salter is a certified scuba diver and private pilot who has traveled to 17 countries in North and South America, Europe and India and visited every U.S. state except Alaska. He married G. Yvonne Miller in 1957. They have two children, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Mr. Salter attributes his success to his willingness to work as hard as possible.
