As a clinical specialist focusing on sports injuries of the hip, knee and shoulder, his chief focus is joint preservation of the hips and knees, and he is a leading authority and instructor in hip arthroscopy and other medical procedures such as complex ligament reconstructions, knee osteotomies (bone removals) and advanced knee arthroscopy, as well as robotic partial knee replacement. He has served as a team physician for the New York Mets for 10 years and an assistant orthopedist with the New York Rangers for five years.
Dr. Ranawat has earned many honors during his career, including the T. Campbell Thompson Prize for Excellence in Orthopedic Surgery, the Jean C. McDaniel Resident Teaching Award at the Hospital for Special Surgery, the Maurice Müller European Traveling Hip Fellowship and the AAOS Washington Health Policy Fellowship, and has made New York Magazine's list of Top Doctors four times, in 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021. He is certified with the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Ranawat has written over 100 articles for numerous peer reviewed publications and authored three books.
Dr. Ranawat counts his parents, his family, his work ethic and his desire to improve patients' well-being as chief influences on his work. He additionally assists his father, also an orthopedic specialist, who is still practicing at age 86 as well as his brother, a renowned arthroplasty surgeon as well.
