Having earned the distinguished title of professor emeritus, Dr. Althoen taught on behalf of the department of mathematics at the University at Michigan-Flint for 35 years. He originally hailed from Hofstra University, where he worked from 1973 until 1975. He also lectured at Lehman and Hunter Colleges of the City University of New York in 1972 and 1973. Dr. Althoen's tenure in Michigan included rising to become a full professor of mathematics in 1985 and, that same year, being named as the chairman of the department. He notably served on nearly two dozen committees on campus and was the director of academic assessment in 2001. Dr. Althoen also served as a consultant for Mott Community College between 2001 and 2003.
From 1976 to 1994, Dr. Althoen co-authored seven books on mathematics, including "Statistics: Concepts and Applications," with H. Frank, through Cambridge University Press. Authoring numerous other works in various scholarly journals, his most notable paper was published in 1983 and titled 'When is R2 a Division Algebra?' The article was included in American Mathematical Monthly and is still being referenced today. Dr. Althoen also served as a referee for several professional journals and was a reviewer for Zentralblatt für Mathematik, an international reviewing service in Berlin. Additionally, he has become a frequent speaker and has organized and attended many seminars and conferences in his field.
A dedicated community advocate, Dr. Althoen has been involved in sports as an assistant soccer coach for Central High School's women's varsity team and as an assistant soccer coach for Pierce School and three other teams in Grand Blanc, Michigan. He also volunteered his time as a co-score keeper for Flint Central High School's women's soccer team. Other activity to Dr. Althoen's credit included volunteering for the Flint Historic Preservation Study Committee and chairing the Pierce Community Council.
Dr. Althoen graduated from Fairborn High School and completed a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics, with honors, at Kenyon College in 1969. Shortly thereafter, he acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 1973. Supporting his subsequent career, Dr. Althoen has been a member of the Mathematics Association of America, the American Mathematical Society and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In 1990, he was recognized with a Faculty Achievement Award from the University of Michigan-Flint.
