Raymond N. DuBois Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. DuBois is a prominent medical professional, educator, academic administrator, and researcher who, for the past five years, has been aligned with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC as the dean of the college of medicine. Appointed to his position in 2016, he was subsequently named a distinguished university professor in the department of biochemistry and medicine in 2019 and the director of the Hollings Cancer Center in 2020.

Having held a career in academia since 1991, Dr. DuBois worked for more than 15 years at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he taught as a professor of medicine, cell biology, cancer biology, and cell biology. Furthermore, he directed the division of gastroenterology, hepatology, nutrition, and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. Following this period, he spent five years at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as a provost and executive vice president of academic affairs. He was notably named the Ellen Knisely distinguished chair in colon cancer research. Recruited by Arizona State University in 2012 as the Dalton professor of biochemistry, he also joined the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in 2013 as a professor of medicine.

Aside from his scholarly work, Dr. DuBois chaired the board of directors of the Keystone Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology. He was also active on various boards for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, and the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance Foundation.

Inspired to pursue a career in medicine after several of his relatives suffered from cancer, Dr. DuBois realized how much he enjoyed research while pursuing his academic efforts. Earning renown for his work as a physician-scientist over the years, he is a recognized expert in the study of prevention and early detection of cancer. Among his most outstanding achievements, he was the first to report the link between the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme, inflammatory mediators, and colon cancer. He also discovered the molecular mechanism for inflammation-promoting cancer. Dr. DuBois notably holds a U.S. patent as the co-inventor of a method for identifying and targeting cellular genes needed for viral growth and cellular genes that function as tumor suppressors in mammals. Widely published for his research, he is presently the editor-in-chief of the Cancer Prevention Research Journal. He has contributed over 160 articles, 60 review articles, 25 book chapters, and three books.

In various civic and nonprofit initiatives, Dr. DuBois, a leader, was active with Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) as a member of the scientific advisory board in 2010 and its vice-chair in 2018. He is currently on the scientific advisory board of the Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation, the president and chair of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Foundation Board, and a member of the board of directors for First Capital Bank.

Dr. DuBois earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry, with honors, at Texas A&M University in 1977, a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1981, and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in 1985. Following these accomplishments, he undertook an internship, residency, and fellowship at the John Hopkins Hospital between 1985 and 1991. Additional educational pursuits to Dr. DuBois' credit include completing a business administration and management certificate as part of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center management development program in the Owen Graduate School of Management in 1999.

Dr. DuBois was elected as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also a past president of the AACR, the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, and the International Society for Gastrointestinal Cancer. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. Furthermore, he is an honorary member of the Tinsley Harrison Society at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and an elected member of the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars at Johns Hopkins University and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society at MUSC and the National Academy of Medicine. Commended for his expertise, Dr. DuBois was honored with the Margaret Foti Award for Leadership and Extraordinary Achievements in Cancer Research, received a Catedra Gonzalo Rio Arronte Award from the President of Mexico, the Anthony Dipple Carcinogenesis Award from the Oxford University Press, and, among others, the Dorothy P. Landon AACR Cancer Research Prize.
