BOZEMAN, MT, January 11, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Alan Anson Wanderer, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. A leading figure in the field of allergy and immunology, Dr. Wanderer is a physician, clinical research scientist, inventor of medical safety products, and medical educator for more than 50 years. Dr. Wanderer graduated from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1961 and subsequently trained in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital and pediatrics at Cornell Medical School where he was Chief Resident. After two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he completed a fellowship in allergy and clinical immunology at National Jewish Health in Denver. He established a private practice in Denver as the President of Allergy & Asthma Consultants of Colorado. and simultaneously was a clinical staff physician with the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at National Jewish Health. During his tenure there, he was involved in clinical research projects involving immune deficiency disorders and cold sensitivity syndromes. He was appointed President of the Colorado Allergy and Asthma Society and recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology. He is now an Emeritus Clinical Professor of Allergy & Immunology, the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Medical School.

These publications received over 5,000 citations by other medical authors. He is recognized nationally and internationally for his groundbreaking research on cold sensitivity disorders. In particular, he researched an inherited cold sensitivity disorder, (Familial Cold Autoinflammatory Syndrome, i.e., FCAS) and in collaboration with Dr. Hal Hoffman ( Head of Pediatric Allergy, Clinical Immunology, and Rheumatology at the University of California at San Diego), led to the discovery of a mutated gene called cryopyrin that caused FCAS and two other inherited disorders, altogether known as Cryopyrin Autoinflammatory Periodic Fever Syndromes, i.e., CAPS. He and Dr Hoffman successfully treated FCAS and the two other CAPS syndromes with medications that blocked a messenger of inflammation, called Interleukin-1β. The cryopyrin protein was then discovered to be the essential protein for one of the most important innate (born with) mechanisms of immunity called the NLRP3 Inflammasome. There is an international pharmaceutical effort to develop medications to control inflammation induced by the NLRP3 in multiple disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disorder, chronic intestinal inflammatory disorders, gout, diabetes mellitus type 2, metastatic melanomas, multiple sclerosis, chronic liver disorders caused by obesity and more. As a result of his research, he has been nominated twice for the Gold Award for Excellence in Clinical Research at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.
He was the co-developer of a widely used safety device (Hematype®) that prevents blood spray onto technicians in blood banks and is now used in the majority of blood banks nationally and internationally. In 1999, the Industrial Designers Society of America honored Dr. Wanderer and his associates with a Gold Medal Medical Design Excellence Award. He has received 21 U.S. patents for inventions preventing needle sticks and for eyeglass retention devices that allow professionals to wear magnifying loupes, thereby avoiding the need to wear lanyards that can contaminate operating fields. More recently he and his son Robert Blake, M.D., received a U.S. Patent for a rifle rest and co-founded a company to market this product called the Road Runner Rifle Rest.
Additionally, he has authored a well-received novel, Anaphylaxis a medical thriller; a guide for patients and medical professionals to evaluate and treat chronic hives; and more recently is engaged in writing a self-help book as a guide to control atrial fibrillation with magnesium and potassium supplements.
Amongst his civic activities, he is most proud of his efforts with many participants in preventing the destruction of the Golda Meier Home in Denver which was subsequently moved to the Auraria campus of the Metropolitan State University where it now exists as a museum. A rededication ceremony in 2022 honored him and all the participants for saving this historic home.
