Dr. Simpson has enjoyed a long and successful career in medicine as a staff neurologist at Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders (MIND) in Farmington Hills. Originally founded in 1969 as Glendale Neurological Associates, MIND has since become the largest, most comprehensive practice of its kind in the state. Dr. Simpson also works in the field as a neurologist and electrodiagnostic medicine consultant and as a physician for the Wheel-Chair Hockey League. Among his previous positions, he was the director of the MDA Clinic of Southeastern Michigan in Farmington Hills between 1991 and 2009 and from 2009 to 2016, respectively. Additionally, he maintained involvement as the director of the MDA/ALS Center of Southeastern Michigan in Farmington Hills from 2010 until 2016.
Adjacent to his primary career accomplishments, Dr. Simpson joined the University of Michigan in 1992 as an assistant clinical professor, and was later named as an associate professor. He has continued to teach as a professor of neurology since 2008. Among other appointments, Dr. Simpson served as the director of fellowship training in neuromuscular disease on the University of Michigan campus in the department of neurology from 1992 to 2002 and was the director of the Muscular Dystrophy Clinic on campus between 2001 and 2009.
As a neuromuscular specialist, Dr. Simpson has extensively studied neuromuscular diseases. He has notably contributed chapters to several books and over 200 scholarly articles disseminating his findings. He has also served in various editorial roles, including as the chief editor for the Journal of the American College of Neurologists and Psychiatrists. Additionally, he holds several patents in his field. Aside from his writing contributions, Dr. Simpson has lectured extensively throughout the U.S. and on an international level.
Involved in several civic and nonprofit organizations, Dr. Simpson is active with Carmelite Sisters, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Heifer Foundation. Professionally, he is active with the American Osteopathic Association, the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, the American College of Neuropsychiatrists, and the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is also a distinguished fellow of both the American College of Neurologists and Psychiatrists and the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Likewise, Dr. Simpson is a longtime member of the honorable societies of Psi Sigma Alpha and Sigma Sigma Alpha.
Dr. Simpson graduated from Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods, Michigan, in 1973. He was subsequently accepted at Wayne State University in Detroit, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1977 and a Master of Science in human anatomy in 1979. Dr. Simpson later attained a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983, followed by a residency in neurology at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills between 1988 and 1991.
Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1979 shortly after achieving his master's degree, Dr. Simpson advanced to the rank of a lieutenant colonel before retiring in 1997. During the length of his service, he notably worked within the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta. Honoring his service in the military, Dr. Simpson was decorated with a Distinguished Service Medal, a Meritorious Service Medal, a Legion of Merit Medal, an Army Paratroop Medal and, among others, a War on Terrorism Medal.
