After earning a Bachelor of Arts in philology from Universidad de Valencia in the late 1980s, Dr. Juan-Navarro began his career as a teaching assistant with West Virginia University, from which he obtained a Master of Arts in comparative literature. Subsequently, he worked at Columbia University as a teaching assistant and preceptor before graduating with a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in comparative literature from the prestigious institution. While pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Spanish and comparative literature from Columbia, Dr. Juan-Navarro furthered his expertise as a visiting assistant professor for Seton Hall University.
Since 1995, Dr. Juan-Navarro has excelled at Florida International University as a professor of Hispanic studies. Throughout his career, he has also gained considerable knowledge as the graduate director of the department of modern languages at Florida International University and a member of the editorial board for the Delaware Review of Latin American Studies. Moreover, he garnered a Doctor of Philosophy in literary theory from Universidad de Valencia. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Juan-Navarro has been affiliated with the Modern Language Association.
Dr. Juan-Navarro has likewise contributed to a plethora of publications, including "Nuevas aproximaciones al cine hispánico: Migraciones temporales, textuales y étnicas en el bicentenario de las independencias iberoamericanas (1810–2010)," "A Twice-Told Tale: Reinventing the Encounter in Iberian/Iberian American Literature and Film" and "Archival Reflections: Postmodern Fiction of the Americas (Self-Reflexivity, Historical Revisionism, Utopia)." In total, he has written eight books, 60 journal articles and numerous book chapters. Although his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Juan-Navarro is incredibly proud of developing 20 courses for online programs in Spanish.
For his outstanding body of work, Dr. Juan-Navarro was presented the Foundation Research Award from Florida International University, the Matriculation Merit Award, the Faculty Senate Teaching Award, a Distinguished Teaching Award from Columbia University, the Online Development Grant from Florida International University, the Provost Humanities Research Grant and the LACC Faculty Development Travel Grant, to name a few. In the coming years, Dr. Juan-Navarro intends to accomplish more in research, write a new book, continue developing curriculum for an online master's degree in Spanish and participate in a community project with Cuban filmmakers.
