Dr. Baron is the medical director for the Tennessee Medical Foundation (TMF), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Brentwood. As a leading physician who specializes in chronic pain and addiction, he has practiced in the region for more than two decades, during which time he served as a medical director for a residential treatment center. Dr. Baron has enjoyed a parallel academic career as a clinical assistant professor at the Vanderbilt School of Medicine in the department of psychiatry.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Baron has become a frequent speaker. Hosting approximately 40 lectures each year at state and national conferences, he covers various topics related to addiction, pain, physician health and professionalism. He also serves on the steering committees for the Tennessee Chronic Pain Guidelines and the Nonresidential Buprenorphine Treatment Guidelines. Additionally, he was honored to be invited to join the Federation of State Medical Boards, where he participates with various workgroups that rewrite policies on professional sexual misconduct and impaired physicians. In a volunteer capacity, Dr. Baron lends his expertise as a medical director for the Nashville/Davidson County Drug Court and is active on the board of the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program.
Previously, Dr. Baron was appointed to serve on the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners in 2010. Reappointed in 2015, he was instrumental and proud of the regulatory work that he accomplished during his two terms. He also chaired the committee of the Tennessee Controlled Substance Monitoring Database for three years. Dr. Baron resigned from both positions when he joined the TMF.
Widely published over the past 40 years, Dr. Baron has contributed to numerous scholarly medical journals, including Tennessee Medicine, Advances in Wound Care: The Journal for Prevention and Healing, and the Journal of Opioid Management. He has written about such matters as physician suicide, the safety of epidurals, postoperative recovery in children, medical marijuana and more. In 2006, Dr. Baron published research that demonstrated that high dose opioids increased chronic pain scores.
A fourth-generation physician, Dr. Baron prepared for his career by earning an Associate of Arts at Oxford College of Emory University in 1979. Continuing his studies, he attained a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry at Emory College of Emory University in 1981, followed by a Doctor of Medicine and a Master of Public Health at Tulane University in 1986. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship at Tulane University School of Medicine, a residency in anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine, a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Saint Louis Children's Hospital, and a second residency in psychiatry at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he was recognized as the chief resident. Well qualified in his field, Dr. Baron is board certified in anesthesiology, psychiatry and addiction medicine.
To support his professional endeavors, Dr. Baron is a member of the Tennessee Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Nashville and Davidson County Academy of Medicine. He is also a southeast regional director for the Federation of State Physician Health Programs and an elected distinguished fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. In 2017 Dr. Baron received the Commissioner's Award for Exceptional Service to Population Health which was presented by Dr. John Dreyzehener, the Tennessee Commissioner of Health. He also received an Exemplary Leadership to the Board of Medical Examiners (BME) and a Dedicated Service to the People of Tennessee Award, both of which were presented to him by the president of the BME.
