Driven to pursue a challenging career, Mr. van Huyssteen elected to study for a degree in processing engineering at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering (Extractive Metallurgy) in 1993. Upon graduating, he began working as a process metallurgist for Anglo American Gold Division (which later became AngloGold Ashanti) in various roles in operations and projects across the company's operations, including that of plant manager. In the early 2000's, Mr. van Huyssteen furthered his expertise, earning a Master of Business Administration with a focus on new venture creation and information management from Bond University. In 2004, Mr. van Huyssteen transferred to work at the Anglo American Research Laboratory (later Anglo Research). As a registered professional engineer and project management professional, Mr. van Huyssteen gained considerable expertise in commodities exposure regarding gold, silver, copper, nickel, titanium, diamonds and heavy minerals.
In 2009, Mr. van Huyssteen made an employer change and started working as the process manager for Newmont Corporation's Ahafo Gold Mine in Ghana on an expatriate assignment. Following this assignment, he transitioned to Newmont's processing and metallurgical technical services facility (Malozemoff Technical Facility) in Denver, Colorado, from where he provided project and operational support services to Newmont's operations in Africa and North America. In 2017, Mr. van Huyssteen was promoted to the position of General Manager at Newmont's Merian Mine in Suriname.
In 2019, Mr. Van Huyssteen transitioned to Newmont's South American regional offices in Miami, Florida as the General Manager of Operational Services for the region. Shortly thereafter he was promoted to the position of Vice President of Productivity. As an executive, he ensures that operations that fall within their region work as efficiently and cost effectively as possible while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all their personnel. As a logical progression in his career, Mr. van Huyssteen will be pursuing roles with additional responsibility, such as a senior vice president position and eventually chief operating officer.
