Dr. Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Science from Jacksonville University in 1976, after which he attained a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Dominica in 1980. He subsequently undertook a residency at Beth Israel Medical Center in 1985. Board certified in addiction medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Mitchell's expertise resides in addiction medicine, especially in regards to alcohol and opiates. He began his career in private practice with Dr. Marvin Eiger, who is known as the author of "The Complete Book of Breastfeeding."
Having aspired to become a doctor since the age of eight, Dr. Mitchell was initially interested in pediatrics out of a fascination with continuity with his patients, through which he could watch them grow from a newborn to a college graduate. However, he later entered the field of addiction medicine after his brother tragically passed from a heroin overdose. Committed to saving people from a similar fate, Dr. Mitchell was elected to a fellowship to the American Society of Addiction Medicine in 2019, having been a member since 2013.
In 2009, Dr. Mitchell established his own practice, Mitchell Medical PC, as an addiction medicine physician. In this capacity, he assists patients in their assessment, treatment and medication management. Looking toward the future, Dr. Mitchell hopes to address systemic problems in the field of addiction rehabilitation, such as issues with insurance and the various inadequacies of rehab and detox. Believing sincerely in the need for a better system to better manage the health and treatment of his patients, he aspires to establish his own inpatient rehabilitation center to help clients in his own fashion.
