Having drawn inspiration from the example of a high school teacher, Dr. McGregor pursued an education in science. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Georgia in 1962. Harboring a drive for unravelling the mysteries of science whilst the biotechnology field began to gain traction, he furthered his studies and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry and natural products from the University of South Carolina in 1969. Likewise interested in patent law and inspired to help a friend who was wrongfully convicted, Dr. McGregor resolved to study law and attended Oklahoma University, from which he graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1978.
Dr. McGregor has been admitted to practice before the Texas Supreme Court, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of the United States and the U.S. Patent Office. He garnered years of experience as a patent liaison, research chemist and teacher prior to being recruited as an associate attorney at Baker & Botts in 1978. He excelled in this role until 1985 and later worked as an attorney and managing partner for various other law firms. In 1989, Dr. McGregor accepted a position as the senior biotechnology specialist at Baker & Botts, a role in which he flourished until 1994.
Since 1996, Dr. McGregor has found success a lawyer and the owner of the Law Offices of Martin L. McGregor. Additionally, since 1998, he has performed duties as the executive vice president of Gemini Health Technologies Inc. He has been a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Houston Intellectual Property Law Association, the American Chemical Society and the American Arbitration Association. Moreover, he has served as the co-chairman of law for the Biotechnology Industry Organization since 1993. A trusted voice in the field, Dr. McGregor is a member of the editorial board for Biotechnology Law Reports and has contributed numerous articles to professional journals.
Having been deeply involved with BIO International, Dr. McGregor is proud to have helped the organization attract speakers and attendees. Notably, he has been deemed a distinguished military graduate of the University of Georgia as a Chemical Corp First Lieutenant. Looking toward the future, Dr. McGregor hopes to enjoy his retirement and travel throughout the world.
