Having amassed more than three decades of expertise in aviation and aerospace policy, Mr. Huettner formed Charles Huettner Associates LLC, an aviation and aerospace consulting firm, in 2003. In this capacity, he specializes in providing services in cross-government/industry aerospace strategies, problem solving and coalition building. Mr. Huettner formerly worked as the Executive Director for the Aerospace States Association, an association of State Lt. Governors, between 2005 and 2018. Prior to this he enjoyed a lengthy career with the Department of Defense (DOD), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) in the Executive Office of the President, all of which have been instrumental in the formation of his consulting firm. He is currently serving as the drone association (AUVSI) representative to the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization.
Mr. Huettner was the Deputy and Acting Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety in the FAA between 1988 and 1995. He previously served as an inspector, Branch Manager, and Flight Standards Division Manager. He negotiated the strategic alliance between the FAA and NASA in 1997 and served as the first Executive Secretary of the FAA/NASA Executive Committee responsible for implementing the accord. During his tenure with NASA, Mr. Huettner was responsible for a $500 million aviation safety research initiative as the Director for Aviation Safety Research.
Other noteworthy achievements to Mr. Huettner's credit included working as the Aviation Policy Advisor in the NSTC during the Clinton and Bush Administrations where he led the White House coordination of aviation, safety and security policies and programs including removing Selective Availability from GPS making it useful for civil applications. Of all his assignments, however, he was most proud of being the Executive Director of the Presidential Commission on The Future of the United States Aerospace Industry from 2000 to 2003 recommending to Congress the establishment of the Next Generation Air Transportation System Joint Planning and Development Office (NextGen JPDO) and the establishment of the goal of sending an American to Mars.
Mr. Huettner was the Aviation Advisor in the White House during the 9/11 attack, and coordinated follow-up actions. Mr. Huettner later wrote about his experiences in his book, "Autobiographies and Other Funny Stories."
Mr. Huettner has published four books in total. Aside from his autobiography, he released "The New Paradigm for Belief in God: The Theory of Everything," "The Word & The Spirit: How God Speaks to YOU," and "Jesus Reveals Revelation." Mr. Huettner also published works through the federal government including "Toward a Safer 21st Century" and the "Final Report of the Commission on The Future of The United States Aerospace Industry."
While attending The University of Akron, Mr. Huettner was required to participate in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Choosing the U.S. Air Force, he began his military career and became a pilot, serving between 1969 and 1999. He rose to the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. His last assignment before retiring was as Reserve Augmentee to the Air Force Chief of Safety. Mr. Huettner is an Airline Transport Pilot rated to fly the B-747, B-727 and the Air Force C-141 Starlifter. He has also completed significant flight time in various business aircraft, including the Gulfstream IV.
Recognized as a leader in his community, Mr. Huettner served as the president of the Old Town Civic Association in Alexandria, Virginia, from 1991 to 1993. He was also elected as a Governor of the Old Dominion Boat Club and is a 32nd degree Mason. Supporting his career, Mr. Huettner has been a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Royal Aeronautical Society. He also served on the advisory committee of the Flight Safety Foundation.
Mr. Huettner earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Management at the University of Akron in 1969 and a Master's Degree in Public Administration at Harvard University's J. F. Kennedy School of Government in 1985. Mr. Huettner later studied at the Virginia Theological Seminary where he received a Diploma in Theological Studies.
During the course of his career, Mr. Huettner was decorated for his military service with numerous medals, including a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.
