A talented musician and composer who began studying the flute and saxophone as a child, Ms. Maginnis since established Woodwinds Studio and Publishing in 1992. Founded after spending four years as a woodwinds' specialist for Maryville City Schools in Maryville, Tennessee, and three years as a saxophone and oboe instructor at the School of Musical Arts in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, she boasts extensive expertise in her field. Civically inclined as well, Ms. Maginnis has volunteered her time with Habitat for Humanity, and devised a saxophone and oboe scholarship for talented, low-income musicians at the School of Music Arts in 1985m where she taught and later served on the board of directors.
Born in Oak Ridge, Ms. Maginnis found herself inspired by her junior high school band director. She also drew influence from several of her friends while growing up, who were later accepted to the Julliard School in New York. After graduating from high school, Ms. Maginnis studied locally, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in music from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1999. While attending college, she began playing as a guest artist at the World Saxophone Congress in Washington in 1986 and later at an event held in Kawasaki, Japan, during 1988. The World Saxophone Congress is notably a festival that is held every three years throughout the U.S., which focuses primarily on classical saxophone music. Ms. Maginnis has also played as the principal saxophonist of the Sousa National Community Band since 1992, for which she briefly served as the principal oboe player between 1986 and 1990.
Boasting a portfolio of creative works that dates back to the early 1980s, Ms. Maginnis designed and published a calendar, "Saxophone: 365 Days a Year" in 1982, the same year she published the "Perfect Pamphlet Packet for Young Woodwinders." She also released a video, "How to Trick Your Kid into Teaching You Saxophone" in 1989. As a composer, Ms. Maginnis was responsible for "Sonata #1 for Alto Saxophone" in 1986, followed by "Periwinkles for Alto Saxophone with Wind Ensemble" in 1988.
A consummate professional, Ms. Maginnis is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators and the North America Saxophone Alliance. She is also a member of the Literacy Council. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Maginnis has been cited in the 23rd and 24th editions of Who's Who of American Women.
