An accomplished artist who specializes in pastels, Mr. Flattmann came of age with a deep appreciation for the arts. Drawing his inspiration from masters like Edgar Degas, Winslow Homer, and James McNeill Whistler, he cultivated his passion with oils and watercolor, and has since developed an impressive portfolio through his studio, Alan Flattmann Fine Art. During the earliest stages of his career, Mr. Flattmann taught at the John McCrady Art School in New Orleans and later taught there between 1967 and 1982. He subsequently became an instructor of his own painting workshops in 1970, which he continues to pursue in the present day. Additionally, he became a painting instructor and travel art tour leader in 1987. More recently, Mr. Flattmann served as an instructor for Abbey Art Works in Covington, Louisiana, in 2017.
Showcasing his work, Mr. Flattmann has been included in numerous one-man shows, including at the Bryant Galleries in New Orleans and numerous other locations between 1975 and 2010. He has also been included in national and international solo exhibitions, including at Windsor Fine Art in New Orleans in 2013, the Art Associates of Lake Charles Gallery in Lake Charles and Barnwell Art Center in Shreveport, is in permanent collections at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Mississippi Museum of Art, the Oklahoma Art Center, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and, among others, the Hang Ming Shi Pastel Art Museum in Suzhou.
Well regarded for his artistic prowess, Mr. Flattmann wrote "The Art of Pastel Painting" in 1987, with a second edition arriving in 2007. He was also featured in several books by other authors, including the 2014 publication of "An Artist's Vision of New Orleans: The Paintings of Alan Flattmann." Furthermore, Mr. Flattmann's work has been printed in many art magazines, including American Artist, The Pastel Journal, Pastel Artist International, Southwest Art, and Pratique des Arts, a French publication.
In 2014, Mr. Flattmann was honored to serve as a member of the American delegation of pastel artists, where he was invited to take part in the First China Biennial International Pastel Art Exhibition and Symposium in Suzhou. He was among five distinguished pastel artists from the U.S. to participate. Mr. Flattmann also received an Elizabeth T. Greenshields Foundation grant in 1973 which enabled him to live and paint on the island of Barbados for one year. He is a founder and president of the Degas Pastel Society, and a member of the Pastel Society of America, and the Southeastern Pastel Society.
Throughout the course of his extensive career, Mr. Flattmann received a multitude of awards and recognitions, including a 2004 Best of Show at the Biennial National Exhibition by the Pastel Society of North Florida. He was also recognized by the Pastel Society of America with recognition in its Hall of Fame for 2006, a Joseph V. Giffuni Memorial Award in 2009, and a Salmagundi Club Award in 2016. He later received a Eminent Pastelist Award by the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2017. For his teaching contributions, Mr. Flattmann was honored with an Outstanding Teacher Award from the American Artist Art Masters in 1996.
