Renowned as a surgeon and educator, Dr. Shabot became a founding partner at Relia Healthcare Advisors, a consulting company, in 2019. In this capacity, he provides his many years of medical experience in quality and safety assessments, executive leadership development, and organizational culture development services on behalf of health care leaders and corporations. In addition to his responsibilities as a consultant, Dr. Shabot works as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston in the school of biomedical informatics and a professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the school of health professions. He also sits on the quality committee for Mercy Healthcare System, and as a board director for the Scottsdale Institute.
A former system chief clinical officer and executive vice president at Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, Texas from 2007 to 2019, Dr. Shabot was instrumental in the oversight of 17 hospitals, 20 ambulatory surgical centers, and 300 ambulatory sites and chaired Memorial Hermann's Accountable Care Organization board when it saved $200 million between 2013 and 2015. Under his guidance, the organization received numerous awards and recognitions, including the John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality in 2013, the Baldrige National Quality Award in 2016, and the International Hospital Federation's Dr. Kwang Tae Kim Grand Award in 2019. Dr. Shabot previously spent 25 years at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from 1982 until 2007 as associate director of surgery, director of surgical intensive care units and chief of staff.
Additionally, he taught general and trauma surgery at the University of California at Los Angeles for nearly 30 years and directed the surgical intensive care unit at the Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. During his career, he also served as a board director for the eHealth Initiative and Foundation and as the medical director for Enterprise Information Services at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Furthermore, as a seasoned researcher, Dr. Shabot has contributed articles to various peer reviewed journals.
Born in Houston, Dr. Shabot studied locally, graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1966. He subsequently transferred to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1970. He completed an internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas between 1970 and 1971, followed by two years with the U.S. Public Health Service, where he served to the rank of a lieutenant commander from 1971 to 1973. Dr. Shabot subsequently completed a General Surgery residency at Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, California, between 1973 and 1978.
Dr. Shabot has been fortunate to be aligned with several prominent professional organizations throughout his career. Among them, he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, where he served as governor, and the Southern California Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, where he previously served as the president and as a member of the board of directors. He is also a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics and the American College of Critical Care Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Shabot is a past president, treasurer and board director of the Society of Computers in Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine.
