Now retired as a professor, Dr. Gianakaris taught English and theater at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo between 1966 and 2004. During this time, he additionally served as the associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1979 to 1982. Dr. Gianakaris began his career at Illinois State University, with which he advanced from an assistant professor to an associate professor between 1961 and 1966.
Dr. Gianakaris was also appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Missouri during 1974. Moreover, he dedicated to his free time to research and conducting interviews with the prominent British playwright, Peter Shaffer, who was known for writing several award-winning plays that were also adapted into films like "Amadeus" and "The Royal Hunt of the Sun." He subsequently authored and edited the 1991 book, titled "Peter Shaffer," which received a second edition in 1992. Moreover, Dr. Gianakaris worked as the chairman of the Kalamazoo Area Council for the Humanities at Western Michigan University from 1980 to 1984.
A widely-published author, Dr. Gianakaris' first book, "Plutarch," was released in 1970. In the years that followed, he was responsible for penning and editing numerous other works in addition to co-founding and co-editing Comparative Drama from 1966 to 1990, a peer reviewed, quarterly scholarly journal. Likewise, he was recruited as an editorial consultant for several leading publishers, including Dickenson Publishing Company, Fairleigh Dickinson University Press and the University of Missouri Press. Additionally, Dr. Gianakaris was the lead music and theater reviewer for the Kalamazoo Gazette between 1984 and 2014 including the Gilmore Keyboard Festival.
Dr. Gianakaris initially pursued an education at the University of Michigan, from which he initially earned a Bachelor of Arts in English language and literature in 1956. He continued his studies at the aforementioned university with a Master of Arts in 1957. Dr. Gianakaris eventually graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin in 1961.
Dr. Gianakaris received several accolades during his professional career, including an Arts Council Award and a Teaching Excellence Award. He also secured a Folger fellowship from the National Endowment of The Humanities in 1993 and 1995. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Gianakaris has been included in the first edition of Who's Who in Media and Communication and the second and third editions of Who's Who in Entertainment.
