Mr. Chivukula is the commissioner for the State of New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. Appointed to his position in 2014, he is an instrumental democratic political leader who bears more than 25 years of public service expertise. Prior to being named to his role, he spent over a decade as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly, representing the 17th Legislative District between 2002 and 2014. He was notably the first Indian American to be elected to the New Jersey General Assembly and just the fourth to be elected to state office in the U.S.
During his tenure, Mr. Chivukula served as the deputy speaker, chaired the telecommunications and utilities committee and was a member of the appropriations committee. Prior to becoming a state legislator, he spent many years in Franklin Township, New Jersey, beginning in 1993 as a municipal chairman. Mr. Chivukula later garnered a reputation as the Democratic party chair, councilman and mayor.
Noted for his contributions and advocacy for global warming, Mr. Chivukula began sponsoring the first solar renewable energy certificate program and offshore wind energy in the legislature. He was also recognized for passing dozens of legislations, including one with the approval of former Governor Chris Christie, which allowed civic celebrants to legally officiate weddings and end-of-life services after completing necessary accreditations. In 2015, Mr. Chivukula co-authored his first book, titled "THE THIRD WAY" with Veny W. Musum, which expounds on his views on inclusive capitalism.
After having graduated from college, Mr. Chivukula began a successful career in engineering, and was hired as a design engineer for Electronic Associates between 1978 and 1980 and the lead engineer for Leeds & Northrup between 1980 and 1981. He later served as the director for Compucom Global Solutions and as the director for Siratech International, until 2004. Additionally, Mr. Chivukula lent his expertise as the chairperson for Rangam Consultants Inc.
Mr. Chivukula has served on a multitude of committees during his career, including the intragovernmental advisory committee and the communications security, reliability, and interoperability council of the Federal Communications Commission. He was also the co-chair of both the Science and Technology Legislative Caucus and the World Languages & International Studies Legislative Caucus. Among his professional affiliations, Mr. Chivukula is a national committee member of the Association of Indians in America, a past president of the Asian American Political Coalition, and a member of the telecommunications act modernization task force of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners.
Born in Nellore, India, Mr. Chivukula received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering at Guindy College of Engineering in 1972. He subsequently attained a Master of Science in electrical engineering at City University of New York in 1976, followed by additional graduate electrical courses at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
